Is there any potential for damage to hard disk by performing a multiple (back to back) dban wipe?

Is there a specific reason you're asking this? I can't think of any possible scenario in which writing data on a drive "back to back" would cause any damage...
When you delete a file, you delete the directory telling where the contents of the file are stored. The contents of the file don't actually get erased, they just get marked as being available for other stuff to be put there. "Empty" space means "nothing of value here", not "nothing at all here". DBAN (and other erasers) simply overwrite everything with random garbage. It works exactly the same way as writing files to your disk, but it puts random garbage there so that there are no valuable file contents left on the disk.
