DOS Version

The published miniumum requirements of a DBAN competitor says that the processor of the system with the HDD to be erased must be at least an Intel 486. That product creates a boot disk from which the DOS program is run. My assumption is that DBAN requires the subect system to be already booted into DOS before running DBAN from diskette. Is there a minumum processor or DOS version requirement for running DBAN? I need to wipe the HDDs of both old IBM PS/2 286 and 386-based systems.

This assumption is incorrect. DBAN is self-contained.

DBAN requires an IA-32 class CPU and 8 megabytes of memory.

DBAN does not have a DOS dependency.

DBAN will not run on a 286 computer.

DBAN should run on a 386 if it has enough memory, but 386 computers with 8 megabytes of memory are rare.

A product based on DOS is likely the better choice for this kind of hardware.

Processor requirement

Thanks very much, dajhorn, for the information. Saves me a lot of time trying something that wouldn't work. I'll keep looking.
