Erase DDS tapes?

I need to blank some DDS tapes, before I can sell / give them away.
I would like to use something more realiable than a magnet. Can I use eraser, or does anyone know of any other utility I could use. I have HP Sure store external SCSI tape drive, and I am using the backup utility on windows 2000 pro. I am assuming the built-in erase utility will not erase the whole tape. :?:
 
Boot the computer with Knoppix (or somesuch) and run:

$ mt compress
$ dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/st0

You want hardware compression disabled.

Don't use ntbackup to blank the tapes.
