"Failed to erase unused space"

I just ran a unused space erase and several files came up with the "Failed to erase unused space" error. What causes these errors to occur?

Also an unrelated question out of curiosity, let's say I run the Schneier 7 pass and then run the DoD 7 pass on the same drive. Did I basically overwrite the drive 14 times?

Those files are likely cluster tip erase failures and should be normal.

Yes, if you run both types of passes you'd have completed 14 passes.
