HD "grinds" every 6 seconds

Since installing Eraser 6.0, my hard drive makes a short grinding noise every 6 seconds when Eraser is active. Also, when I choose a file to erase, it takes a few seconds for Eraser to react, and it does so by having my HD make loud grinding noises for a few seconds before popping up the "Are you sure you want to delete" message.

I've tried pretty much all different builds, from stable to night builds and they all do it. The previous version didn't. It made no noises and reacted promptly. I'm using Windows 7 Professional 32-bit and a 80 GB NTFS disk.

I'm kind of worried that it is causing wear on my HD, more than it just being annoying. ;-)

Anything I can do?

This sounds like the drive is about to die. Backups would be advised!

Run chkdsk from the command prompt to see if there are any bad sectors.

Correct me if I'm wrong but grindong noise is more like a physical issue. I mean your drive is about to die mechanically. Back would be nice here as well as purchasing a new one if out of warranty already.
