Is random overwriting sufficient?

If simple random overwriting is OK for free space -- which surely includes remnants of files that were updated, deleted or defragged -- why not use that method in all cases?
 
You tell me. If you feel one overwriting pass with random data is enough, nothing stops you from using it for files as well.
