Wiping free space - external or from running OS?

I'm wondering if it makes any difference to perform a wiping of free space if it is done on an external hard drive compared to doing it on the system drive.
I know you have to turn off system protection so that eraser can access the sectors windows would normally reserve for the restore points and shadow copies. Will eraser also access these sectors if it wipes the free space of an external hard drive, on which windows is installed?

If you do turn of shadow copies, then yes, even as an external drive Eraser will erase the space previously held by VSS.

To turn it off: It's in Computer properties (one of the stuff hidden pretty deep). You might want to google on how to turn of System Restore.
