Unable to import Excel contacts into Android or Gmail – any solution?

I have a large list of contacts saved in an Excel file (.xlsx). When I try to import them into Gmail or my Android phone, the file is either rejected or the contacts don’t appear correctly. I think the issue is that Excel files need to be converted into vCard (.vcf) format first.
