Denied Access To Files On External Drive (Drive E)

Shut down your antivirus app and try again. It seems another process might be locking the files.

    Access to path...... is denied

This looks like permissions. Try run as administrator on eraser.exe

problems in setting default file eraser method

Can you reinstall by choosing 'run as' administrator from explorer? I think you might have a permissions error.

    Trying to access internet

There is no license issue. As to it checking for updates we will have to investigate this as a bug.

Low level format => 7 DoD pass =>2 random pass

manually emptying the recycle bin just leaves the files as marked deleted. They can easily be recovered. Freespace erase is designed to solve this.

    HD "grinds" every 6 seconds

This sounds like the drive is about to die. Backups would be advised! Run chkdsk from the command prompt to see if there are any bad sectors.

    Trying to access internet

Eraser should not be accessing the internet only to check for updates. Could you install wireshark and check to see what is happening?

    Access to path...... is denied

What happens if you manually empty the recycle bin? Also are you the only user of the PC? It could be another user account owns those files.

Low level format => 7 DoD pass =>2 random pass

Casual == most people/tools on the internet. If you were determined it might be possible to infer some data. e.g imagine a data block of 10101010 now one pass erase is supposed to replace each with random strings 10101010 could become 11101110 or equally 10101011 or 11111111 . We are in the...

    Erased files showing up

Erasing unused space only does that. These files can still exist in the system restore section or recycle bin of that drive all marked as undeleted. I suggest you format the drive and then run a free space erase of 1 pass.

I have a problem with eraser

In your case you must be running some application which interferes with eraser e.g some Anti-Virus/Malware or undelete tracker? Shut all these down and retry. There is also the possibility the drive is at fault - run a check disk.

Low level format => 7 DoD pass =>2 random pass

You only need to do a 1 pass erase, this will render any data on the drive useless to the casual observer. To achieve this, format the drive and then do a free space erase.

cant erase (run as administrator problem)

It could be that the drive is being locked by another application? Have you turned off all AV software etc

Is it possible to completely delete from the ssd?

The nature of the SSD design makes it impossible to really erase in the true sense, also running eraser on an SSD will actually shorten its operational life. The best option is to use http://www.truecrypt.org and create a container on the drive.

    Error in Eraser 5.8.8

Have you tried installing the latest version: https://eraser.heidi.ie/download.php ? Not sure the cause of your error as it seems to be OS specific.
  18. garrett01

    no internet install

Download the 5.7 version from sourceforge as it could be an issue with the older XP OS. 5.7 will do the same job just in an older interface :)

    Recovering files

If you delete a file, empty the recycle bin and then do a freespace erase the files are gone for ever provided the erase completed successfully. Erasing an individual file will just erase that file and not previous versions of the file deleted by other means, hence the need for an unused space...

    Unused disk space

Correct, wiping unused space cleans the drive of previously deleted files. Remember to empty the recycle bin first.
