24/7 working programs, like syncservers ?

Kaspersky has a useful feature that you can disable it for a set period, which will need to be some hours for a free space erase. In your circumstances, the PC would need to be off-line for you to do the test, so this may well be an unattractive option. I look forward to learning about your...

    Installing 6.1.0.2617

Well, let's start with the Microsoft health warning, which you should read before doing anything. It is pretty explicit. If you still wish to go hunting, you will find that C:\Windows\Installer is a protected system folder (no surprise); you will need, at least temporarily, to change your...

Re: Eraser 6.09.2343 stuck at "old resident files system tab Welcome to the forum. And thanks for doing the research before you posted. You are correct in saying that we do get reports of this type. Unfortunately, the behaviour appears to be, at least to some extent, system dependent...

    Installing 6.1.0.2617

This is where a simple utility to repair the cache would have been much more useful than a troubleshooter. Eraser (like the majority of Windows programs these days) uses the Windows installer. The problem you are having is actually with the installer (= part of Windows) rather than the Eraser...

    Installing 6.1.0.2617

After a bit of searching, I have found a link to an installer troubleshooter from Microsoft, updated as recently as February this year. For obvious reasons, I can't test it, but it would be my next port of call. David

    Installing 6.1.0.2617

Just to be sure - there was no Eraser entry in Control Panel|Programs and Features? Also, use msconfig to check that there is no startup entry for Eraser. If there still is, disable it, reboot and try again; that makes sure nothing is trying to run in the background. Beyond that suggestion...

unused space erasing failed to erase some undeleted files?

Re: unused space erasing failed to erase some undeleted file Use the link in my signature to go to the FAQ, and read the post on Getting to know Eraser 6, which has a section on running Eraser as Administrator. Microsoft clearly perpetrated a major communications failure when, from Vista on...

    Installing 6.1.0.2617

Installing Eraser on top of another version (especially if it was Eraser 5) almost always creates trouble. You don't say precisely what error you are getting when you try to reinstall, but I suspect that probably doesn't make much odds. You will definitely still have a conflict with some...

24/7 working programs, like syncservers ?

Taking your last point first, disabling of cluster tips in Eraser 6 is done in the 'Add Data' dialog when you set up a task (there is a box which is ticked by default; you just untick it). The 6.1 development builds have the option, in the settings dialog, to enable the Black Box crash...

    Installing 6.1.0.2617

I have removed your email address from your post, as this can be seen by anyone and invites spamming. It is not completely clear to me whether or not a partial or complete installation of Eraser exists on your machine. If it does, can you uninstall it in the normal way? If you can, reboot to be...

24/7 working programs, like syncservers ?

I can help with some of this. First a question: is the syncserver drive on a physically separate disc or simply a partition? Firefox saves its data in a profile which in Vista/Win 7 is by default located in the Local\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles sub-folder of the user's Appdata folder; if the path...

[v5&6] "Elevation Required" message while Erasing Free Space

Re: [v5&6] "Elevation Required" message while Erasing Free S I have suggested to Joel that what is needed is a separate "getting to know Eraser" document (somewhat like the one that is in the FAQ). This would be accessible from the help menu, but, more importantly, would appear after...

unused space erasing failed to erase some undeleted files?

Re: unused space erasing failed to erase some undeleted file If the free space erase fails, and Eraser stops working, there is always the possibility that erasing files are not deleted. It all depends on when and how the crash happens. If Joel regards it as a significant task, I am sure that...

unused space erasing failed to erase some undeleted files?

Re: unused space erasing failed to erase some undeleted file Your understanding is correct. If Eraser did not complete the erase, you may still have undeleted erasing files on your system. The identification and deletion (not erasure) of these files is extensively described in the FAQ (link in...

24/7 working programs, like syncservers ?

I think Joel's point is precisely that the sparse attribute will survive many copying operations. Also, if any of the data streams within the file are sparse, the system will regard the whole file as sparse. And, as far as I know, compression/decompression algorithms will not change this. David

I fully understand :) Whenever I have had a problem like yours, it turned out that I hadn't properly deleted the Recycle Bin folder. Whenever I have deleted it properly, the odd 'files' that caused these errors then disappeared. David

    Running Eraser on virtual machine

If the files in question are not necessarily large, this sounds like attempts to force unlock or otherwise get handles to files that are not immediately available. David

I don't think that you have a significant security/privacy issue, but I can't tell from what you say whether the problem file has been re-created or the Recycle Bin folder was not deleted first time round. I prefer to get at the Recycle Bin folder from an elevated instance of Windows Explorer; I...
