It is being used by another process...your computer. But it can be deleted before you boot-up. IDS does this via batch file. I have it set to search in all Hard Drives (I have 2 HDs) 1. Click run 2.Put a check mark next to tht index.dat I want deleted( all the check boxes are marked by...

    System Restore

I also have windows xp home edition with sp2. Make sure slow polling is unchecked in Edit/Preferences/General, see if that makes a difference. You might have to do a delete and reinstall. Before reinstallation do a search of HD to make sure all files are gone also do a search of the registry...

Eraser CREATES a file of same size

Pete should that not be “~ERAFSWD.TMP” not Dq3b2tfc, at any rate I would check the files propertys to see if the creation date matches the date f the erased program and open the file itself to see what is in it. That said Windows will rename files, but the reason is unrelated to Eraser...

Enough of a change to warrent a change of the default (as it is downloaded) to pseudorandom.

Eraser 5.7: Gutman vs. US DoD vs. Pseudorandom

Gutmann is considered the most secure for erasing specific files/folders, and Pseudorandom for erasing freespace.

Is data stored anywhere but on the hard drive of a computer?

Carver, in all fairness, that's just spreading FUD I had a trojan dropper in my temp file and several in my browser cashe and picked up several Java parisites from just surfing.

Failed to determine cluster size from drive A:\.

Forgeting about the dates for a minute. If you were wiping freespace why would the log talk about A:\. I would start thinking I ran all tasks instead of 1 task- wiping freespace. llRC didn't 5.7 come with a task set-up for A:\ as a example.

Running Eraser without Having to Install

I think it has to be designed that way. The last thing I downloaded that I didn't have to install wasF-Secure Blacklight its for Rootkits http://www.f-secure.com/blacklight/. Also "Hijack This" is the same and "Cool Web Search shreader", There're both .exe . There are .exe that you do have to...

    Erasing index.dat at statup

Re: Successful ways to erase index.dat Funny my batch file works. I may be wrong (because I haven't used Index.Dat suite very long) but when you get the command prompt type dialog box saying access denied IDS is trying to delete the index.dat without replacing it first, so it copys the...

    System Restore

Did you check to see if all the restore points are still there? What version of Eraser? Under what operating system? What are your settings? Part of Erasing freespace is cleaning cluster tips on Restore points. Eraser Does not eraser restore points unless it is configured to.

Why do we HAVE "Slow Entropy Polling"

I read the discribtion before, Pseudorandom Data is default for freespace while gutmann is default for file erasing. To me the sentence in bold type means if you have a uncompressed drive you can use Gutmann or Pseudorandom Data, but if you have a Compressed drive you can ONLY use Pseudorandom...

Why do we HAVE "Slow Entropy Polling"

I only use it for wiping freespace, then turn it off. Tried to wipe my browser cashe, after I wasn't able to access the cash. I would get that dreaded hour glass, some how I got to the cashe again, turned off "Slow Entropy Polling" and Erased browser cashe again. I could access the cashe...

(Please change) Right-Click 'Eraser Secure Move' - v5.8

That would be a good idea, to have a configuration file (a .txt file) with binds so that you could assign shortcut keys to any function. Your programs that you use at present my use certain shortcut keys.

    Clearing pagefile on shutdown

The page file can't be Erased other than at boot (its in use), so you would have to delete pagefile.sys or overwrite it at boot. BTW If you set the size manually, the rule of thumb is 2 times ram in KB, but M$ says 1 1/2 times in KB

    Erasing index.dat at statup

I agree, if you folow the setup instructions, the dangerous index.dat files are all in red and are unchecked and wont be deleted and the scan is pretty fast. I have 9 .dat files in my Opera v8.54 browser (global.dat; cookies4.dat; vlink.dat). I can't use IDS on them, so I create tasks with...

I also went back to 5.7. But first I did a sfc/scannow typed in a command prompt, with the OS instillation CD in the CD-rom drive. To replace all those damaged files, and there was a lot.
