Probably your drive has a fault. Running eraser could have hit the bad sectors. Just by creating a new document would trigger the same effect. If you can attach the disk to another PC, you might be able to read the contents otherwise its time to use your backups.

Eraser creates a temp folder on that drive - just delete this folder or re-run the freespace erase.

I suggest 2 options: 1. Use the older eraser - 5.8 2. Burn a DBAN CD and wipe the drive then reinstall XP

People come and go as products evolve, Eraser is no different :)

Are you able to 'whitelist' an application in your malware scanner? There is no reason that eraser might not erase a particular file type unless its being affected by another application

What version of windows are you using? Do you see any errors in the windows event log?

Eraser does this to obfusticate the original name of the file, its part of the erasing process. Using Eraser with a system designed to backup immediately any changes makes it pointless using Eraser in the first place.
