    Eraser vs TrueCrypt?

Truecrypt creates a file that looks like random data. The file itself is not regarded as freespace, since the file is visible, though it looks meaningless to the casual observer. Even a hidden volume has to be hidden within the contents of that visible file (the point being that someone could...

Difference betwenn Cluster Tips and File-Slack

Here is my understanding of it. It is a lot easier to draw a picture than to explain with words, but here goes. When a file does not fill up the last cluster (group of sectors) it is using, an incomplete sector is filled in with a bit of what is in RAM, so this part is called RAM slack. The rest...

    Checking CD/DVD-Rs

The only way I have found to check this is to use a linux tool called "dd" to create an image file of the CD, then examine the image in a hex editor. Not a very elegant approach, but it tells you exactly what is on the CD.

    md5 sum for DBAN iso?

Darik, maybe I just missed it, so please let me know. I was about to suggest to another user to check the MD5 sum of the ISO, but then I went to the sourceforge page and I'm not seeing an official one. I see a PGP public key and a sig file, but I don't use PGP at work and would rather not have...

    CD ROM doesnt work

For "pcproblem", I was going to suggest checking the MD5 sum to see if your download was corrupted, but now I see that they don't provide one on the sourceforge project page...I'll ask about that. Try downloading the iso once again and burning from that, just in case it was corrupted during...

    CD ROM doesnt work

No, don't unpack the iso. Follow the directions I gave you for turning the iso into a CD. DON'T tell Nero to make a bootable CD, just choose Burn Image and point it to the iso file and check the box to finalize the CD. Nero will do the rest.

    CD ROM doesnt work

ISO images are a snapshot of the CD. If all you are doing is copying the file to CD, you won't get anything. Rather than telling Nero to make a bootable CD, click on Recorder, Burn Image. Then point it to the ISO file and check the box to finalize the CD.

    Trouble Burning CD-R

ISO files are like a snapshot of a CD or DVD. Don't try to open the ISO, it has to stay as a whole image. If you are using Nero 6, select Recorder, Burn Image. Point Nero to the ISO and it will burn the contents of the ISO to the CD. Don't use the wizard for making an ISO CD, as that is a...

    Erasing Flash card

I have never met a forensics program that could recover any data after one pass of overwriting. Some people *believe* that such programs or technology exist, but they have not been demonstrated effectively on modern drives, at least publicly.

    Erasing Flash card

Yes, Eraser works fine on flash cards. I just ran a test on a 16MB card I use in a camera. Here was my procedure: 1. Made a forensic disk image of the card, using "dd" as a disk imager. 2. Ran "foremost" on the image and extracted 15 JPG files, some of which were deleted a year ago (via the...

cannot delete folder "H8GTT781.L1J1"/no access to

If your intent is to wipe the whole drive, then I suggest using DBAN instead of Eraser. Even a single wipe with DBAN will clear your entire drive (or partition if you prefer).

cd rom version wont burn to cd

ISO files are CD images (like a snapshot of an entire CD), which means you can't burn it to CD as a file and have it work. In your software that you use to make CDs, there is probably a way to burn ISO files. It may reference burning a CD image. For example, in Nero brand software I would...

    How good is Eraser

Having tested it repeatedly, it works wonderfully. Even one pass is sufficient. This has already been discussed in great detail in these forums, so if you have doubts, do a search. Or better yet, test it yourself.

    Is IEXPLORE.EXE an Eraser file?

It is Internet Explorer. If you don't currently have it open, then it shouldn't be showing up in Task Manager. If you do have it open, then that is why it is showing up.

    I have a big problem.

If you are using Windows 2000 or XP, there is a feature that will show you what partitions are dedicated to each drive letter, but you need to check this prior to booting with DBAN. Open Computer Management (right-click My Computer, select Manage). Then under the Storage section, you will find...

In case those drivers don't help (I didn't see the sound device listed), another forum mentioned that the sound device is "Analog Devices AD1816". Drivers for this seem to be available various places.

Cannot Access C: after running NUKE...

Relax, what you are seeing is normal. When a drive is totally overwritten, it no longer has any partitions defined. You or he will need to run Fdisk from either a boot-floppy or a bootable CD. Fdisk will see the physical drive (not yet as C:), and you will need to define at least one...
