    Using DBAN on Dell PC's

So long as the recovery disk is bootable and has the necessary factory shipped files then I can't see why not. I have a computer that has a recovery partition and have the recovery / restoration DVD. I have used DBAN to completely wipe the hard drive and then used the disk to reinstall...

DBAN hangs at the very beginning

the alternative, had you not found the source of the problem, would have been to try another version of DBAN (specifically the latest Beta version). Glad the problem has been solved!

    alternatives to dban

which version of DBAN are you using? In the past 2 years there have been two stable versions and three beta versions. The latest stable version is 1.0.7 and there's been one beta since then. I used the latest beta version on my laptop (80GB drive) as the 1.0.7 version was working at a crawl and...

freeze after 6 seconds of overwriting

I just use DBAN whenever I'm selling a computer or like at present when I'm doing a reinstall. For the latter I've no real reason to use DBAN but I just like the idea of having a blank drive before I do an install.

freeze after 6 seconds of overwriting

yeah, I think the mention I made of the different OS's was a bit of a red herring as DBAN doesn't care whether the OS is Vista, XP, Win 98, 95 or Linux since to DBAN the OS and all its related files and folders is just data on a disk, just as if it were an mp3 or jpeg file. DBAN just sees the...

freeze after 6 seconds of overwriting

Hi Overwriter! The beta version contains different drivers which allows it to run on more computers. Back in February, before the beta was released Darik acknowledged that DBAN wasn't able to run on all types of computer (it's related to the hard drive, incompatible drivers or something like...

freeze after 6 seconds of overwriting

replying to my own post here! I was in the middle of running DBAN on my PC, which is why I was at this forum (after encountering problems with the DBAN beta, that "DBAN has finished with non-fatal errors" message, above). On the page main DBAN screen I had four "unrecognised devices" showing...

freeze after 6 seconds of overwriting

what version of DBAN are you using? I've found that the last stable release (v1.0.7) works fine on my Windows XP computer but refuses to work on my laptop (Vista Home Premium) - it loads up but after pressing F10 to start it almost freezes from the word go and makes little progress, taking...

Making a DBAN CD with an edited syslinux.cfg

Even that forum appears to have been abandoned - no-one has had any queries answered there for over a month. Additionally, a beta version of DBAN was released on April 29 2007 (the previous stable version being released in August 2006) and there's been nothing since - on the surface it seems...

Free Space Problem with Eraser 5.3

Eraser 5.3 wasn't tested on XP. The documentation shows that v5.4 was the first version to be updated to be confirmed to work on XP. However the documentation also shows that various minor tweaks were still made for compatibility with XP up to version 5.541. The next release, v5.6 seems to have...

    Warning! Possible serious bug.

I also came across this problem two years ago (I lost a lot of music files, learning the hard way!) and actually made a post about it in response to a similar observation made by a poster about a year and a half ago: http://www.snugserver.com/phpbb2/viewto ... f1197c2057 Unless the CD...

free space wipe make unreadable ALL data on 2 hard-disk

oh, I understand now. So using the scheduler to do a freespace wipe uses the erasing options set out in Preferences - Erasing - Files option rather than Preferences - Erasing - Unused Disk Space. Thankfully, I've never used the scheduler to do a free space wipe, and never did even under v5.7...

free space wipe make unreadable ALL data on 2 hard-disk

I think ciropizza means he uses the first and last 2k option for deleting files not for deleting freespace. ciropizza: can you do a check. Can you start Eraser and go to Edit - Preferences - Erasing and tell us what are the options you have for: Files Unused Disk Space the latter...

free space wipe make unreadable ALL data on 2 hard-disk

it's not included in v5.84 in the freespace wipe, though it is in the file deletion options. Perhaps the original poster set his file deletion options for this, but that wouldn't affect any other files than those that were being deleted. In 5.84 he couldn't have set it in the Unused Disk Space...

5.7 instead of 5.84 works on unused disc space

can I just ask about something doreen2202 mentioned - the poster uses v5.7 but has Vista. Is 5.7 compatible with Vista? I only ask because I've bought a laptop with Vista (Home Premium) and installed the current release, v5.84 (which works fine, though I haven't, as yet, done a freespace wipe)...

Time to erase free disc space

A word of caution: if you do access the BIOS, be careful of what you do - you can make your computer inoperable if you don't know what you are doing. If you feel uncomfortable with what you are doing, just switch off your computer. When it restarts, it will go back to its default startup process.

Time to erase free disc space

To access the BIOS you normally have to press one certain key over and over again as soon as the computer starts. On mine it's DEL(ETE). On some it's F12. It depends on the motherboard...

Time to erase free disc space

DBAN version 1.0.7 will show all the partitions on a hrad drive. However, it doesn't label the partitions in such a way that you can tell which partition is which - meaning you are using pot luck to guess which partition is the one you want to delete. When I run DBAN in interactive mode I get...

Time to erase free disc space

did you download the .iso file for DBAN version 1.0.7? This is the current stable release (there is also a beta, upgraded, version with a much longer version name). I have version 1.0.7, it contains a .IMA file (of 1,400kb in size), which is a WinImage file. Additionally it has 4 folders (with...

Eraser may have messed up a dll.

Re: Rebooting fixed it! I have a feeling it may not be a bug, but a form of computer self-defence on the part of Windows! If programs other than Eraser produce the same outcome, I have a feeling that touching the cluster tips of font files must somehow cause Windows to disable something that a...
