    Spyware detected in download!

there seems to be a number of spyware checking programs that keep returning these false positives - there's even a current thread on the go at the CCleaner forums about some spyware program picking up on CCleaner as spyware / trojan. One of the knowledgeable posters there has detected that...

    Erasing the XP Swap File

as far as I can see it just enables the deletion of the swap file at shutdown by making a tweak in the registry (changing the relevant registry setting from 0 to 1). I'd like to think it securely wipes the swap file, but my instinct is it doesn't (for such a large file, with the method I have...

Erase Unused Space on my Recovery partition

has Windows turned off System Restore during the running of Eraser? There are instances where this has happened as the amount of free space runs low during the Eraser running process and this can free up a fair bit of space. For instance, the last time I turned off System Restore (I always do...

"Failures": Which files are normal not to Erase?

as these files are necessarily (or otherwise!) locked by Windows, one option is to start XP in Safe Mode then do a Cluster Tip wipe. This will ensure that the cluster tips (the free space unused but locked - this is because file sizes don't exactly match the cluster sizes to which they are...

    Forum Posting Problem

I'm also getting an error message after I post, and click on returning to the thread No posts exist for this topic Presumably that is because it is trying to take me to the last message - which is on that page that doesn't exist...

    DBAN operation successful, but.....

I'm glad that answered your query! For a moment I'd thought you'd meant you'd been able to boot into the hard disk, which is where Windows normally resides. A successful wipe of the hard disk drive partitions should display an error message when you boot up the computer (assuming there is no...

    DBAN operation successful, but.....

as far as I am aware, all data on the hard drive will be wiped completely. Are you referring to the BIOS? This is the information you can access when first starting up and pressing something like Delete or F10 on the keyboard (it varies from computer to computer). If so you need to see that...

Erasing form bin or disc location

deleting the file from its current location is more secure. Using Eraser, it's easier to do it this way, using the context menu to delete the file. But also, when you delete a file to the Recycle Bin, tracks can be left to show that the file was deleted from X location to the RB. The file IS...

    Errors in log file

Incidentally, the files that are locked only affect Eraser when doing a Cluster Tip Area wipe. Just wiping freespace will produce no "errors" as there are no locked files in freespace. In Eraser you can check/uncheck these options.

    Errors in log file

one way to reduce the amount of files that are locked is to run Eraser in Safe Mode once in a while. As this is slower than running it in normal mode, I would suggest that the run just be confined to Cluster Tips and perhaps just even one pass.

erase unused space - not erase all old stuff?

I downloaded the trial version. After doing a Quick Scan, you can then ask the program to look for just deleted files / active files or a combination of the two. Are you sure you searched for deleted files only? I've used Restoration, Recover4All, this above program, and a small handful...

erase unused space - not erase all old stuff?

Eraser works by overwriting sectors which are marked as unallocated (ie freespace). To do this it creates thousands of temporary files which are then erased themselves at the end of the process. It creates smaller files rather than one or two larger files to speed up the process. The end...

erase unused space - not erase all old stuff?

Eraser will delete whatever is in freespace - regardless of whether the file was there before Eraser was installed. Eraser doesn't see "files" when deleting freespace. It just sees unallocated sectors and writes over them. Unless I'm wrong and the program really can tell that not only is...

Is it safe to use Eraser in safe mode?

definately slower in safe mode. My guess is that some things that need to be loaded to speed up things aren't loaded. A cluster tip wipe in safe mode is recommended every now and then, as fewer files are locked. But for optimum performance / speed I would suggest doing the actual unused space...

    Eraser 5.7 and system standby?

you need to change the power options. It's like running any other program where the computer goes into standby, it will just terminate the running of the program as far as I can see. Presumably, it needs the mouse or something to be moved once in a while to stop it powering off... if so, you...

Eraser v5.6: Erasing unused portions of HD?

another thing that can use lots of space is never cleaning up the old System Restore points. You can adjust how much space is allocated to this feature. You can also use disk cleanup to clear all but the most recent restore point.

Eraser v5.6: Erasing unused portions of HD?

the other alternative is to run disk cleanup and see if you have things that aren't really needed eg temporary files, temporary internet files. There's a free application called CCleaner which can help delete unwanted files that Windows loves to store around the computer. I use that too, it's...

Eraser v5.6: Erasing unused portions of HD?

I run the feature twice a week (I have Eraser 5.7) and have never had any problems though I find my computer works better afterwards if after running a freespace wipe I restart my computer. The only problems I have read about are people choosing the quick erase option in 5.8 which isn't...
