Can I recover files that I have erased?

The thing that bothers me the most about a post like this is that it isn't specific enough. The OP says he "erased" some files - but did he really? Or did he just delete them? What kind of files were they? Word, text, pics, songs, movies - what? Did he use ERASER to "erase" them - or...

    Clearing pagefile on shutdown

I don't understand why everyone seems to not ever want to have to re-start their computer to accomplish something. Both swap/page files and index.dat's deleted need a re-start if you're going to be sure of them actually all getting nailed so that Eraser can eliminate them securely. Pete

    Erasing index.dat at statup

And I'd go with Index.Dat Suite - it accomplishes the same thing plus does a lot more, but it has to be run and then the computer re-started to clear found index.dat's. Pete

    How about the registry

Which kind of definitely points out the fact that you should do a free-space wipe every single time you walk away from the computer at the end of a session, I would say. (After having deleted everything in sight first, of course). Pete

Shutdown after finishing the erase process doesn't work

Carver - Just out of curiousity, how long did you wait to see if the computer was going to re-start itself? I had almost given up this afternoon (waiting for it to re-start itself after an "on Demand" free-space wipe) - had even actually clicked on Start/Shutdown - when I got an on-screen...

Shutdown after finishing the erase process doesn't work

Hi Carver! Un-checking all "logging" options in Eraser allowed the "ON-Demand" field to hold the "Restart" option - but the "Scheduler" still returns to "None" (even after having tried to set both of them individually), at least here. Pete

Shutdown after finishing the erase process doesn't work

Okay, I managed to find the setting for that again ( on the main interface of Eraser, you simply double-click on the name of the drive, select "Properties" and on the "Data" tab you'll see "When Finished" down at the bottom). It says "When Finished" and it - supposedly - gives you the...

Shutdown after finishing the erase process doesn't work

Don't feel bad - I can't even find that particular option in the 5.8 program interface anymore. Was it a one-time deal, where you could only set it up once?

    temporary internet files

Having neither the time nor the skill to "find" all the multiple folders (both permanent and temporary) that Windows, IE, FireFox and Opera (go through all the settings on any browser you use and make sure it's set to delete all temp files and personal info upon exit, to start with, and that it...

What is the point of erasing first/last 2K? - v5.8

A question that does occur to me about the "Quick" wipe is this: If you do use the "Quick" wipe feature - which is supposedly removing/over-writing permanently the first and last 2k on deleted files - if you afterwards run a "Full" erase of free-space - will Eraser still be able to...

What is the point of erasing first/last 2K? - v5.8

Makes sense if someone was just trying to make sure the file names couldn't be plainly and easily read by anyone with administrative access on the computer (forgeddiboutit if you're computer gets seized and subjected to an in-depth forensic examination, though). There're any number of free...

    "Erase unused Space"

Carver - It would seem as though the HD itself is the limiting factor as far as the amount of time it takes to erase free-space goes (both its' size, GB-wise. and how much of it's actually being used - the more "un-used" space on the drive, the longer the free-space "wipe" takes). I just have...

    How about the registry

I don't know how much good it does, truthfully, but I run two programs - NTRegOpt http://www.larshederer.homepage.t-online.de/erunt/ and PageDefrag http://www.sysinternals.com/Utilities/PageDefrag.html - to try to keep the registry in shape. At the end of any given computer session, the way I...

NOD32 finds infections during free-space wipe

No, I'm not using a custom pattern, just a simple "Pseudorandom Data" (1 pass) with all three "Overwrite" options checked. I've only gotten two "Alerts" so far this year: Time Module Object Name Threat Action User Information 1/14/2006 8:17:41 AM AMON file F:\~ERAFSWD.TMP\8RI0IC91.REG...

NOD32 finds infections during free-space wipe

Still happening, BTW: 1/21/2006 8:27:24 AM - AMON - File system monitor Threat Alert triggered on STEVEN-KDHP68D1: F:\~ERAFSWD.TMP\7AG1PA8F.HTT is infected with probably a variant of BAT/Bomgen.G virus.

NOD32 finds infections during free-space wipe

Nothing would surprise me, Glenn. Other than Eraser "un-packing" something before over-writing it, I simply don't know what else could be causing the alert (I already know there's nothing bad within Eraser itself - hell, I've been using it for years). Thanks for your response. I'm not...

NOD32 finds infections during free-space wipe

Can't figure this one out. It only happens rarely. When running an Eraser free space wipe on C drive (which is the only drive on here, BTW, other than the CD, floppy and DVD drives, of course) un-attended (I run it nightly), NOD32 will sometimes alert on something found in Eraser's "temp"...

    Eraser won't finish

It doesn't help at all that it's such an intermittent problem, either. Last night when I came home, I fired it up and ran it (that's when I normally do it) - and I'll be damned if it didn't run through correctly. Pete

    Eraser won't finish

At least yours makes it to 90% - mine usually hangs at 75% during a free-space wipe. Are there any known work-arounds/solutions for this? It won't even finish in "Safe" mode. I've been using the one in PGP and also Necrofile, but I don't like them as much as I like the job that Eraser used to...
