URGENT: How does eraserl work in detail? (eraserl -disk d:)

If you think about it, it makes perfect sense. You overwrote the unused space with random data, but the space remains unused. If you then choose to overwrite the unused space again, it will again put random data in the unused space. The space didn't become used because you overwrote it. It isn't...

    question

I would use DBAN instead of Eraser, wipe the drive completely, then restore using your recovery disks. I'm assuming that your recovery disks make the PC like it was when you first got it.

    Eraser vs. Encase

"Obviously"... To merely state that because someone is in gov't that they have techno-magical powers to recover data that has been overwritten is hogwash. Offer some evidence. Demonstrate it or show proof of someone else demonstrating it. Here's how it works: Say a fresh sector has text...

    Eraser vs. Encase

Encase doesn't have any magic methods for finding erased files. If a file was merely deleted, then it can generally recover it if it wasn't overwritten. It cannot put together a fragmented file that was deleted, though it may recover a fragment of it. If a file is erased using Eraser, then...

Mersenne Twister PRNG question in relation to DBAN

The burden of proof lies with you, oh wise one. Show me the evidence.

Mersenne Twister PRNG question in relation to DBAN

As has been beat to death repeatedly, one pass using any method will render the data unrecoverable by any known method. When a section of a drive has been used over and over, what data will be recovered from it? The first data, the second, ...a mishmash of all of it? Practical recovery is...

    Reboots after "Uncompressing Linux..Ok..."

Do you know if the floppy drive itself is any good? Another possibility is that the floppy image you have is corrupt and should be downloaded again.

enormous number of "empty" files being created whe

No offence, but this is covered in the FAQ: http://www.heidi.ie/eraser/faq.php Search on "free space" and you will see that Eraser typically gets rid of these temp files automatically, unless it failed or was interrupted.

Can a Forensic tool detect if a drive has been wiped

Depending on the method used, it can be obvious that a drive was wiped based on the pattern of bits on the disk. But so what? Some forensic examiners take the arrogant approach that you wouldn't be using such software if you didn't have something to hide. But that is an illogical argument...

    making floppy

    1. Download the zip file 2. Unzip the file to your hard drive 3. Put a blank floppy disk into your floppy drive 4. Double-click the Install.bat file 5. Press a key like (Enter or the spacebar) to start the installation 6. When it is finished, it will tell you to press a key to close the...

Create nuke boot disk (on cd?)

Yes, but that is a DBAN question, not an Eraser question. http://dban.sourceforge.net/ Download the CD iso image and burn a CD from that.

    DBAN time for 100gig HDD

Which all means that for most mortals, the 7 pass method is what to use. Unless you actually believe that the federal spooks really have an interest in your hard drive, and the vast majority of us will never even show up on their "radar". You would have to have something on your drive worth...

    DBAN time for 100gig HDD

The 35 pass method takes a long time on any system. You really don't need to do it that way, as it is overkill. The reason there is no definitive answer is that no one has sat down with all the different possible hardware configurations and timed DBAN on all the different hard drive sizes...

    Will DBAN delete NTFS?

DBAN will remove the file system (NTFS, FAT32, etc) as well as any data from the partition or disk that you wipe. When DBAN is finished the disk is basically like it came from the factory.

    Q: making a CD-ROM?

In Nero, select File, Burn Image, browse to the ISO and select it. That is pretty much it. You don't use any of the "wizards" in Nero, though they should make one because so many people ask about this very issue.

    NTFS and ADS Stream

The anti-spyware guru Merjin has created a program that will remove just the ADS from files. It is called ADS Spy and is available from http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/ I tested it on a couple of binary files and it removed the ADS from each without disturbing the binaries. It will list...

Need help. Eraser not working on schedule set

Did you assign it specific tasks to run at the time you scheduled? When you see "failure", it typically means the file was in use. Many program or system files cannot be overwritten while Windows is active since they are used by the operating system, or by open programs.

Help! The program has been running for 166 hours!

Are you using DBAN or Eraser? DBAN is normally what you would use to erase a whole drive. Eraser is more aimed at particular files and unused space. If you are nuking the drive, there is no reason to be concerned with a crash by interrputing the erase process, since you are overwriting...

    Possible feature to add

When adding a new task in scheduler, it would be nice to be able to paste in a path instead of having to click through it each time.
