Looks like there may be issues with this option. I've just tried it here and it won't set a shortcut for me at all. I'll see about submitting a bug report once i've played around with it some more.
Did you remove older versions of eraser before installing 5.86a?
Can you perhaps turn off the...
System Volume Information will be a hidden directory that you won't be able to browse into. I'm not sure how you get around this issue, but I'd suggest running [urlhttp://www.ccleaner.com]CCleaner[/url] on your system and it may remove this file for you as part of it's system cleaning. Once...
Odd, haven't noticed this my self.
Off hand I'm not sure if 5.86.1 is the latest stable version, whis is reported as 5.8.6a on the website. One of these days I'm sure we'll see a standardized naming scheme :)
I'd suggest uninstalling the version you have and perhaps trying the latest beta or...
It lets you see that eraser is working. Try it
1) Select wipe method - eg 7 pass wipe
2) select a file to wipe
3) Start wiping
The verifier will open up the file in a hex editor view allowing you to see the contents. Pressing continue will perform the first pass of the wipe process and then...
Unfortunately Windows and their programs can leave a lot of data lying around be it temp files or metadata or cache etc etc. As eraser only deletes the files you tell it to, unless you select these temp files fir wiping they will be left on your system. As a result these files may contain...
Turn off system restore and then wipe free space.
Ensuring that you've gotten rid of all the files you don't want others to see is quite a task, to be really sure you get everything, if at all possible I'd recommend wiping the laptop with Dban(.sf.net) and then re-installing Windows.
Sounds similar to a ticket I have open at the moment, although mine results in eraser crashing http://eraser.heidi.ie/trac/ticket/195
I'd suggest either updating my ticket with your info or creating a new one.
5.84 is old. Could you install the latest 5.x version either the stable release: 5.86a or the Beta release: 5.8.7beta4. Both can be downloaded form the eraser website (http://eraser.heidi.ie/). I'd recommend staying away from the 6.x version for the moment it has some nasty bugs in it.
If...
Does the log file mention anything about any of the files being locked? I've a ticket open to deal with a similar sounding issue to yours in eraser 6 where scheduler craps out if it hits a file that is locked.
Best I can suggest at the moment is to use the most recent version 5.x release as...
It depends on whether it's a home (pop3/imap) or office (exchange) set up. Regardless eraser will not be able to deal with these emails as they will be stored in a proprietary MS file format.
For future emails if it's important encrypt it with GPG/PGP. gpg4win is a handy package with outlook...
Off the top of my head I do the following (in XP):
c:\documents and settings\<user>\.thumbnails
c:\documents and settings\<user>\Local Settings\Temporary Internet files (remove subdir / leave parent)
c:\documents and settings\<user>\cookies
c:\documents and settings\<user>\Local...
Quickest option at the moment would be to use ccleaner to clean the browser files, ccleaner has a secure wipe function. That just leaves you with wiping Firefox's cookies db which ccleaner can not do at the moment iirc.
It certainly is the most convenient option. Not much use to you at the moment but I'll build a test VM with SP3 when I get the chance and see if I can replicate the problem you are having.
Regarding the files left behind, it is perfectly safe to delete these. If they are still locked you could try running unlocker on the folder or as you suggested do it in linux.
With the hanging of eraser I'm not too sure what is happening but can you tell us What version of eraser are you...
When you say the normal way to you mean via the Eraser On-Demand/Scheduler options? Did it ever work for you?
Can you clarify which versions you've tried.
Hopefully with a bit more info we'll get to the bottom of it :) I've not gone to SP3 yet so can't confirm if that's the culprit...
