DBAN Autonuke CD (or where is SYSLINUX.CFG on the ISO image)

Send me e-mail and I will quote a flat fee for doing this customization. If you are in a rush and can pay with PayPal, then I can get product to you tomorrow. Past that, you could learn how to fully rebuild the DBAN iso file by reading the manual pages for mkisofs and cdrecord. These...

    Sound Card Problem after DBAN...HELP!!!

You must install drivers for your hardware. Get them from the vendor at: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareCategory?lc=en&lang=en&cc=us&os=20&product=59918&dlc=en&

    Memory buffer on HD

DBAN makes long writes to ensure that hardware buffers are written through. This means that the hard drive has 8 megabytes of onboard cache, which works like the cache on the CPU. It loses data when the computer loses power, unless it is battery backed. (Battery backed controllers are...

    Rounds and passes

Yes. The blanking and verification rounds are part of the percentage.

    Sponser

If the hardware arrives in the mail, then I will work on the problem on a best-effort basis. (The i915 fund is currently at $50.) Past that, I charge by the hour. If your company has a substantial number of these computers, then we can discuss it by e-mail.

    CPU load question

Yes. The idea is that your desktop computer has more horsepower in the CPU than in its other components. Whether running DBAN or not, your CPU spends most of its time idle waiting for things to happen.

    CPU load question

This is normal. Most computers are I/O limited. No. No.

DBAN destroyed my network and sound cards (?)

You must install drivers for your hardware. The manufacturer of your computer did this at the factory but did not put them into the restore media. Right-click "My Computer", choose "Manage" from the context menu, and click "Device Manager" in the left pane. Every device with a red "X" icon...

    Code

Not much. Most of the code is in the kernel and system library. I have lost count. Regardless, most of the time that I spend on DBAN goes into testing and user support. Yes, insofar as all of the code is available. Fix or enhance whatever interests you. I have a day job and work on DBAN...

    Help

DBAN does not currently have drivers for external hard drives. It will not wipe media attached by USB or Firewire. If you just want to format the external disk, then right-click it in "My Computer" and choose "Format" from the context menu. If the external disk does not appear in "My...

    CD Boot Disc

Download the ISO from http://dban.sourceforge.net/ and try burning it directly. All released versions of DBAN use the Mersenne Twister. Ob: Isaac will be added to DBAN in a future release.

    New Release

Okay, thanks for the report. This has happened previously with new Intel chipsets. I will watch for a better driver. If it matters enough to you, then send me a hardware sample or make a donation to cover its purchase.

    Any way to increase speed?

This happens because the throughput calculation does not adjust for the first write, which bursts as the buffers are filled. The 5-15 MB/s that you are seeing afterwards is likely an accurate measure of actual maximum unbuffered throughput. DBAN is an inappropriate tool for general...

    New Release

*shrug* It happens. These features are pending, but they need sponsorship. Product updates happen more quickly when I am hired to enhance DBAN. Np.

    DBAN fails to load

This motherboard has the nForce3 chipset, for which there are no good Linux drivers. YMMV.

    Error Code 1

This means that DBAN did not read in what it wrote out to the media. It indicates bad hardware. The blanking pass fills the media with zeroes, which is how you would get a new disk from the factory.
