How do you shut off eraser and only use it when you want to?

Open Eraser > Scheduler and delete the scheduled task. I think it's just provided as a harmless example of how to set the Scheduler but the default install has Erase unused space on Floppy Drive A:\ set to run daily. Note that it is just unused space that is wiped.

    Erasing Outlook Mail Messages

AFAIK, if you move a message out of Outlook as a .msg, .rtf, .htm or .txt, you are actually making a copy of the data that is in C:\Documents and Settings\[username]\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook\Outlook.pst Erasing the copy wouldn't do anything about the deleted (but not...

    Erasing Outlook Mail Messages

I don't think any shredder could erase individual mail messages. If you're on an Outlook Exchange server, the mail is on the server not on your workstation. If you're using POP/STMP you still can't erase what was on the server and the copy on your machine is just an entry in your...

    Help Understanding What to Erase

If re-use of the drive is not an issue, a sledgehammer is probably best.

    Clarification, If You Please

When you run Erase unused space, you can select which drive(s) to clean. Personally, I've never felt the need to clean the OS recovery partition. I've run the function on both NTFS and FAT32 drives repeatedly with no problems.

    Erasing USB key Drives

I'm not saying you're wrong but a couple of observations: 1. If I delete a very large file on my 1GB USB flash memory, it's virtually instant (since it is just updating the FAT). But if I use file Erase, it can take over 2 minutes (which seems consistent with the 7MB/sec write speed of the...

    Erasing USB key Drives

I know USB flash memory is not magetic (so multiple passes won't help) but if Eraser is: 1. erasing a specific file by overwriting; or 2. erasing unused space by filling an entire drive with random data; why wouldn't deleted data be wiped?

Personally, if I was disposing of a computer, I'd use DBAN.

Help! For A Silly ol Bear!

It doesn't sound like anything that could be related to Eraser. I see you have CCleaner. They have a more generalized forum that may be able to help.

Help! For A Silly ol Bear!

Physical memory is RAM (random access memory). 62.45 MB seems odd (it should be a multiple of 32) but should be adequate for Windows ME. Defrag, scandisk and Eraser all work on drivespace not RAM so they won't help with memory issues. Since you are posting here, your computer seems to be...

    Administrative Privileges & Eraser

I hope not. IMHO, if you don't have administrator rights on a PC, then it's not yours and you shouldn't be messing with those files.

NOD32 finds infections during free-space wipe

If Eraser is using the temp folder to write GBs of random strings, could it be doing the "given enough time, a chimpanzee at a typewriter could produce the works of Shakespeare" bit and managing to occasionally create a string that resembles a virus?

How to securely delete Eraser? (by HomeEnd)

Instead of Eraser, you should consider using another app such as the shredder in Restoration which runs from a floppy without installing to the harddrive. The only obvious traces should be in your Start Menu programs list and Prefetch (if you have Win XP); both easily deleted.

    Eraser 5.7 bug ?

I managed to replicate the problem on WinXP SP2. When I repeated the Erase command on the same file, it did erase. I tried it on several files and the bug seems to occur only with very small files. It may be related to the fact that, in NTFS, small files and directories can be entirely...

I can't replicate that on WinXP Pro SP1 or WinXP Home SP2. Is the problem specific to any file type(s)?

Wiped File Names Still Visible - Is This Right?

Kythe is right ... there's conflicting info on the FAQ page. I also found: I heard that Eraser doesn't wipe the filename when overwriting the rest of the file? Is this true? No. You can choose whether filenames are cleared or not, and Eraser can even clear names of all previously deleted...

Wiping files too large for Recycle Bin

Robbie, I tested Restoration on a hard drive and a USB memory stick using restore to original location and copy to new location, and I consistently get the same results as doveman. Restore to original location seems to replace the deleted files and using Eraser seems to render them...

Wiping files too large for Recycle Bin

The default/recommendation is to copy it to another location. If you specify the location in which it was found, it warns you that it will overwrite the original, so I assumed that it does ... but I could be wrong.

Wiping files too large for Recycle Bin

I think undeleting and erasing makes sense (especially if you're in a hurry) but wait for some more opinions. For undeleting files, Restoration 2.5.14 is highly rated and free at several download sites including http://www.download.com/Restoration/300 ... ag=lst-0-1 The user interface is a...
