Thank you for testing for me.
I wonder if the long pauses are while windows is flushing the RAM back to the drive. Those 3 files that were not erased may be for some other reason, I get that issue occasionally.
Could you erase your recycle bin and try again please, with the single pass...
I can’t explain that. This really shouldn’t be an Eraser problem.
Just a couple more questions.
Have you tried to "check disk" the drive ?
Do you use Truecrypt ?
What was the other program you installed before rebooting ?
Could you copy another file of any type to any external drives you...
Yes 5.86.1 is the latest version which will “not” have the first and last 2kb bug. I am guessing / hoping this is just a coincidence.
What file did you delete ? Could it have been a system file by mistake ?
I have XP pro SP3 Eraser 5.86.1 and I have just deleted a file with the first and...
Hi manu
I am pleased you took the time to test Eraser. In fact Eraser V6 is under production and I would be grateful if you would test that release which should be due around Christmas time.
Are you interested ?
Hi
Well the free version (which is the on I hope you are referring to) only performs a single pass with zero’s.
DBAN is much better in my opinion and is also completely free.
Hi osteo
I am not sure why you can’t overwrite those files. Could they be read only or being used by running applications ?
Could your drive be damaged ?
Just to test you could format that drive (now that you have copied your data from it) and then use Eraser to wipe the free space on that...
Whenever you overwrite your free-space you have to do it all in one go otherwise you may miss an area.
Yes I would certainly use less passes, the single pseudorandom pass I mentioned is both fast and secure. Unless you expect a very well financed and determined attacker trying to recover your...
Hi John.
Yeah, the search is a bit strange. :)
You cannot part wipe free space and then return to wipe another day as there is nothing to stop windows dropping new data in the previously wiped free space. There would be no way of being able to tell what area had and hadn’t been wiped...
Hi binolandia
I am not doubting what you are finding but I am unable to replicate your results. I have tested hard drives and floppy disks but I am unable to recover anything.
Instead of performing multiple wipes can you just use the single pass pseudorandom pass as that is what I use. This...
Hi James,
There are not many people who take the time, especially after being in hospital to post back simply to say thank you !
Eraser V6 will be released around Christmas time (I hope) so I think that would be a good time for you to check back here and download it !
Eraser V6 should solve...
I would say that is a small price to pay for the security that Eraser provides you with.
There will be a new version of Eraser released soon. Eraser V6 is a total re-write of Eraser V5 and promises to be a leap forward. I think the recycle bin options will be editable by the user, so that...
Why ?
I am pleased you have found an Eraser alternative that you like and trust. I personally believe Eraser, especially V6 will be the industry standard, free and open source.
Honestly, when V6 is released there will be so much peer review I doubt anything will come close to Eraser but I am...
Yes these were added by Eraser. They give you the option at the time of erasing your recycle bin as to which method you would like to use. I guess the more sensitive the files the more severe the overwrite pattern.
I personally like to have the options available, it just shows how flexible...
I am wondering if all these other eraser type programs are failing your tests that there must be some sort of backup program running or something.
You do not need to make a task in Eraser to wipe the free space or overwrite a file. You can simply right click the drive letter in windows...
Hi binolandia
Wow, ok so you are using 3 laptops all with XP SP3 on and Eraser V5.86.1.
You are making some word documents, right clicking and erasing them. Then you are able to recover these documents with WinHex.
I am stuck, I have tested this on 2 base units here today both with XP SP3 on...
