Well, what's corrupt in the recycle bin can't be recovered, so those are as good as lost anyway.
The recycle bin you see on your desktop is actually a collection of $RECYCLE.BIN folders. So I don't really get what you mean by "functioning" recycle bin. If you mean that you can still send files...
I'd imagine quite a large proportion. This can't be unique to Eraser.
There's a patch for VS2012 to compile for Windows XP, but that is inconsistent to say the least, because it will still default to produce XP-incompatible binaries. And you only need one library to not work on XP for the whole...
Ah, yes. New compiler. The 6.2 binaries are compiled with VS2012, which do not run on Windows XP.
The forum post thing -- I thought I fixed it a while ago. Try clearing cookies first, because there was a misconfiguration a while back.
I also tried erasing directories, it works fine on my computer.

Eraser 6 doesn't have a portable version yet. And Eraser 5's no longer supported.
For your original problem, can you copy and paste the task log here? Right click the task, View Task Log. Select everything then right-click>Copy.
This site is without https, I don't see why it'd send you to http.
I can only think of two culprits then. Your task list might be empty but the file on disk is not: try deleting the task list file (I think there's an FAQ entry, basically go to %LOCALAPPDATA%\Eraser and delete Task List.ersx)...
I can think of two things that may cause this:
1. How long is your task list?
2. Did you have a firewall set to block all outgoing internet connections? Eraser needs an internet connection to verify certificates for plugins which are loaded.
It has come to my attention that a cryptographic key used to sign the binaries which Eraser is built with (nightly builds) was leaked and stored on a publicly-available source repository for a few months prior my discovery. For the majority of users using Eraser and only using official releases...
