Eraser is digitally signed, I suspect your problem was some plugin crashing. Windows update can sometimes fix this.

Shut down your antivirus app and try again. It seems another process might be locking the files.

This looks like permissions. Try run as administrator on eraser.exe

Can you reinstall by choosing 'run as' administrator from explorer? I think you might have a permissions error.

There is no license issue. As to it checking for updates we will have to investigate this as a bug.

manually emptying the recycle bin just leaves the files as marked deleted. They can easily be recovered. Freespace erase is designed to solve this.
