This seems like a bug in the update checker. Could you download and try this version: http://eraser.heidi.ie/download.php?id=292
Here I can erase with no internet or router attached.
You should not have to make firewall changes as eraser will use standard browsing to determine if any updates...
By stopping eraser in mid task means the space used by the erasing process remains un deleted. If you run eraser freespace erase again and this time let it finish you should get the space back.
We moved to Eraser 6 and .Net because volunteers could not be found for the C++ version. Currently Joel is busy in university and I'm limited in the amount of time I can spend on the project.
I do agree the .NET version is a lot less compact but that is the cost of progress.

This issue occurs when eraser has been unable to erase the dummy files created during a freespace erase.
I suggest try to re-run the erase with or search for and delete the hidden directory eraserswp in the root of your drive
I assume you wiped the drive completely? Connecting/reconnecting not working? Its possible the drive has crashed after the 35 pass erase. It might have been on the verge of failure or it needs low level formatting.
Check the manufactures sites for the issue of not seeing the drive.
The .Net runtime has to load up with Eraser when you run the screens. Sadly this is never going to match the old V5 for speed as .NET has to interpret the code rather than actually execute binary :(
This is probably the .Net runtime loading. Once its started up the app should be just as snappy as before. - Perhaps your AV app is rescanning the exe every time.
Is there any speed improvement after several right clicking sessions?
These sound like installer issues - try installing ccleaner and using it to remove the entry for eraser from the install registry then try reinstalling.
