Inability to erase files on an encrypted virtual drive.

TrueCrypt works, though I've not tried FreeOTFE. I will have a go at it later today.

What is the best file recovering software to test Eraser?

Re: What is the best file recovering software to test Eraser There's Recuva which most of us use, and there are commercial offerings like (I believe) those offered by OnTrack. I do believe that the reference would be Forensics Toolkit (FTK) used by information security practitioners, and if...

    Recover deleted file using Eraser?

Thanks for your vote of confidence -- I guess the challenge (as always) would be to continually improve the product (getting difficult since I'm rather short of time now.) I read the review and I do agree Eraser is lacking on the streamlinedness and compactness department (in terms of resource...

This has been detailed here, and mostly affects computers not connected to the internet (yours sounds like it isn't)

[v6] Invalid values / no file erasure methods to choose

Thanks for your help Richard. I'll amend my initial post.

    Recover deleted file using Eraser?

Currently yes, I'm the only one doing development. I'd love to have help around here, but that seems rather far and few between. Garrett and my decision to use C# instead of the "harder" C++ seems to have had very little help on development. I can't remember which post it was the TrueCrypt...

    Recover deleted file using Eraser?

From experience, I'd say no (since the whole point of Eraser was to remove files permanently... if you somehow manage to, then I'd be very interested to know since that means Eraser isn't working properly.

Eraser still running?! Plus error messages

There's no way to remove everything if it is a system drive, unless you use an alternative OS or an alternative solution (DBAN comes to mind) With 6.2 (in beta) you can erase non system partitions, but no more.

    Does Eraser clean MFT?

Yes, Eraser does this by default (as you've probably noticed, it can't be turned off, either. The technique used by Eraser only works when certain conditions are fulfilled, and running the unused space erase creates those conditions.)

Why does CCleaner only take 1hr to free wipe ~400GB?

Erasing cluster tips. Erasing cluster tips cannot be measured by the amount of bytes erased since opening and closing a file takes a significantly longer time than just writing continuous data (on a hard disk, anyway; SSDs are a different story)

    Eraser has stopped working error

The permissions error associated with the unused space erase is documented here. In the final versions of 6.2 I hope that we won't be needing that FAQ entry any more.

Only erase up to a certain percentage of disk

But if Eraser fills up the disk till 80% fullness, you'd still have the same problem if a program suddenly wants to create a file which is > 20% the size of your disk? I think I'm missing something here.

Eraser 6.0.10.2401 Download link not working!

I'm still cracking the build server's publishing script. There's been a server reshuffle and the version of PHP doesn't support SSH... so Garrett will be recompiling PHP soon.

    Eraser has stopped working error

This is a rather long thread, but do the exception messages tally with what you see? If so, unfortunately I do not know what is the root cause apart from the fact that the Crypto API is not implemented like most systems are. Eraser 6.0 uses the Crypto API as a source of entropy, so the...

    new file created upon erasure

It could have been transient, as is most of these problems. I've never used Avira before, so I'd have to depend on community feedback. If more reports come in which suggests that Avira may be interfering with the erase then I would see if I can get in touch with their engineering department...

How do you delete EVERYTHING on a hard drive?

You sound like you are trying to erase a Windows drive. Eraser cannot erase a system while it is running, the current workaround is to remove the disk and place it in another computer to erase the drive on. Alternatively, you can use tools like DBAN, but that would require familiarity with...

Erasing empty space BEFORE or AFTER format?

Yup, if the current data on the disk is not important to you, you can do an unused space erase before formatting. However, if you're giving it away, there's usually information you can't account for and you'd want those erase. For that reason, I'd recommend formatting then erasing. However...

Only erase up to a certain percentage of disk

I believe this thread details Ballast files and how to create them. Eraser isn't currently designed for this purpose, so be careful.
