the new 'spin-off' topic on logging is here. David

    need help removing 5.8.8 remnants

I'm glad it worked, and have learned quite a bit from the exchanges. The use if the virtual space is rather neat. Actually, Eraser starts quite happily if you just use msconfig to prevent the process starting up with Windows. When you use Eraser the process starts, and remains active unless you...

Can not erase in mapped folder of W2K3 Active Directory

... and they'd want the RAID functionality, once established, to be transparent to the user, and therefore to work with normal function calls. The only low-level systems I know of that prevent Eraser working are those (such as wear levelling systems on SSDs and flash drives) which redirect the...

    need help removing 5.8.8 remnants

Joel - I am beginning to remember this advice now. Is your reference in the previous post to the Eraser 6 or Eraser 5 uninstaller? I'd guess that one would need to run both uninstallers (if present and functional) to clear the decks for a good, clean install of Eraser 6. Is that correct? David

Will do but the post requires some thought. David

Can not erase in mapped folder of W2K3 Active Directory

Eraser writes to the Windows file system; as far as the RAID array is concerned, what Eraser does is what any other program does. The RAID controller works, so to speak, at a lower level than the file system and happily works with Eraser's file system calls. David

    need help removing 5.8.8 remnants

It's some time since I used 5.8.8, but in my recollection the only running process is the scheduler. As far as I remember, this can be switched off by unchecking the option to start Eraser with Windows, then restarting. If that does not work, uninstall Eraser 6, restart and see if Eraser 5 will...

Eraser interrupted with error when wiping cluster tips

Joel - Thanks also for your response about logging. This is off-topic, so, when I can, I'll start another thread on the subject in the Programming forum. David

The OP said that the drive is empty. There are surely no cluster tips to erase? David

Agreed. Like other forums, we fight a continuous war against spam. I have administrator privileges, and have deleted the user and their posts. David

    Time to completion estimate?

Erasing large amounts of free space takes a long time. You were right to cancel the Gutmann erase; all the current evidence is that the single pass gives users what they need. Free space erasing works the system quite hard. On my now oldish quad core system with 8GB of RAM, I reckon 2-3 hours...

    Simultaneously wipe multiple hard drives?

You are correct in your analysis. Eraser 6 was designed to be a simple as possible for users, and there was a deliberate decision to run tasks sequentially rather than concurrently, which is optimal for the single drive that most computers have, but not for separate erasing tasks on different...

Eraser interrupted with error when wiping cluster tips

Thanks for the clarification, Joel. It seems that, in the situation you describe, the word 'truncate' is not so much wrong as potentially misleading ... As I've said before, I do agree about the bloated logs (and wonder whether they are a factor in the unexplained crashes). It would be nice to...

files/folders to erase in firefox using windows 7

They do different jobs. A registry cleaner does as it says. CCleaner is, in essence, a file cleaner, clearing out all the clutter (such as logs, history, caches and cookies) that applications leave on your system. CCleaner knows where to look on your system for clutter from a whole range of...

Eraser interrupted with error when wiping cluster tips

I'd stick with the view that Eraser would do no more damage than any other write operation in that situation. If power outages are common, it makes sense to protect mission critical systems with a UPS; basic UPS capability (which will at least get you a clean shut-down) is reasonably affordable...

Eraser interrupted with error when wiping cluster tips

I am starting to think that when you say "erasing cluster tips", you are referring to the whole free space wipe process. That can take a day, depending on the speed of the machine and the size of the drive, but erasing cluster tips on its own should not take that long. Anyway, as I said, I'd...

files/folders to erase in firefox using windows 7

Even though the post is more than a month old, this is a significant question, not least because more recent versions of Firefox have added new items to the list of files/folders to be deleted. My current Eraser Firefox task does the following (all folders/files are in the Firefox profile...

Eraser interrupted with error when wiping cluster tips

It would be the same as any write activity when a power outage occurs (caches would be lost, and there is always the possibility of data corruption). Mostly, in my experience, all would be well. Strictly speaking, no application can 'handle' a power outage, because it will just cease to function...

the confirm dialog box like version 5.8?

Forgive me if this seems discourteous, but the distinction you make is quite unnecessary. Peter Gutmann long ago said that his 35 pass method was overkill for any one drive, and more recent research (which as far as I know has not been challenged) clearly indicates that even a single pass...
