Hi icono
Well ideally I would have used DBAN on your lap top hard drive then reinstalled XP.
However as you sound to have already made a fresh install of XP you could install Eraser and wipe the free space including cluster tips. One pseudorandom pass should be sufficient.
Hi Joel !!!
Still bashing away with Eraser are you !!!!
I am glad you hung in here and I am really looking forward to V6.
I wish you well with your studies.
Hi Treebeard
Eraser was doing its job properly until you pulled the plug on it.
This is how Eraser works. It fills your free space with a temp file until it has completely overwritten all the free space and then it deletes it. Because you stopped Eraser from finishing its job you are now...
In this situation I always recommend backing up any data you wish to keep and then DBAN’ing the entire drive.
Be aware though that this will mean you have to re-install the OS, but I believe it to be the best and safest way to pass on a second-hand computer.
If you want to play really safe...
Don’t worry about this unduly.
The idea about not defragmenting before a free space wipe is that data you wish to destroy may be overwritten with an active file during the defragmenting process. This would mean that the sensitive (previously deleted) file will have only been overwritten...
Phew that’s a better place for it !
Yes that would make sense as windows has locked them.
You assume correctly. :)
I think it is because Eraser couldn’t wipe the cluster tips of those locked files, that’s all. Really this is quite normal and I wouldn’t worry about it if I were you...
Hi PaulaM74
WinSxS (Windows Side-by-Side) stores DLL’s for programs to work. I cannot understand why it is on your desktop though.
Just try shutting down as many programs as you can by right clicking the program icons in the task bar and closing them down.
Alternatively you can run...

I still haven't found out what caused the possible failure on the task report,
Windows locks certain files whilst windows is running. This is quite normal to get these error reports, your security is probably ok.
OK, very wise.
Thank you for taking the time to explain everything. I have a feeling that the way you are approaching writing V6 means that it is going to be very professional, well written and stable software.
Thank you.
Unfortunately I was meaning better as in a more thorough clean.
As I don’t know the technical details I wonder if you could perhaps explain what this is going to mean for V6 users running Vista ? Are they going to be less secure after a pass with Eraser than an XP user is now ?
Is there...
Hi cyberjackal
I understand what you are trying to do. It may be my feature request for Eraser to have the ability to create “ballast” files that you are thinking of.
Yes the creation of these ballast files to fill up most of the free space would indeed save time unnecessarily wiping free...
Hi bobgordc
Is there a particular reason you are still using Win95 ? The reason I ask is that you might actually be wiping the entire disk before throwing or giving it away or something.
If this is the case then you can use DBAN to completely wipe the ENTIRE hard drive. You don’t need to...
