I have an old laptop that is currently being used (probably about 10 years old). However, over the years, it has contained some sensitive documents that have since been deleted. What should I do to ensure that those documents are not recoverable?

Every time I attempt to execute an erase on unused disk space, it executes about 1/5th of the job and then stops moving from that point on. I left it for 12 hours and it had not budged even the slightest. I have closed the program, started over, run the program with administrative privileges...
