I am going to sell a notebook and I'd like to take some precautions. I've reformatted winxp; and wondered if now if I use eraser in some mode it'd really clear the hdd sections that are not in use by the newly installed os. I don't really want to reformat again...but could of course. I only need some moderate amount of 'cleanness' because this notebook wasn't used for very much.

Well ideally I would have used DBAN on your lap top hard drive then reinstalled XP.
However as you sound to have already made a fresh install of XP you could install Eraser and wipe the free space including cluster tips. One pseudorandom pass should be sufficient.
