I SIMPLY LOST A 120 GB HARD DRIVE AND IT WAS WORKING GOOD UNTIL I USED BABAN TO WIPE OUT IT.
WELL, AFTER I USE DBAN , I THINK I WOULD BE ABLE TO USE FDISK TO PARTITION MY HARD DRIVE AND REINSTALL WINDOWS ON IT.
IT NEVER HAPPEN ON MY CASE AND THE WIPING PROCESS IS SUPER SLOW.
IF YOU NEED TO WIPE OUT YOUR HARD DRIVE, CHECK OUT THE HARD DRIVE MANUFACTURER'S WEBSITE TO GET ONE, THAT WILL BE THE SAFER WAY TO DO IT SO..

DBAN IS SUPER DUMB ASS PROGRAM AND IT DIDN'T OFFER ANY GOOD TERMINOLGY TO MENTION WHAT EXACTLY HAPPEN AFTER USING IT.

I DEFINITELY NOT TO RECOMMEND IT TO ANYONE.
DON'T BE FOOLED BY DBAN'S WEBSITE CLAIM.

My windows stopped working after I used dban so I had to buy a new pentium.

DBAN SUCKS DONEKY BALLS!!!!!!!!!

If you want to use DBAN , you must have an IQ intelligence quotient of 70 in minimum, otherwise DBAN will fail.
If your intelligence quotient is 50 or even below, your hard disk will not be usable anymore.
That´s life. Don´t worry.

Secure Erasure of magnetic/Mechanical storage.

For Data erasure i use a little OS called Knoppix 3.7
In a root shell when loaded up you can type dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/hda
this will fill up EVERY SINGLE SECTOR with 00000000000000000000000000
from beginning to end there is a little more you can add to that comand if you want it to overwrite more than once dd if =/dev/urandom of=/dev/hda this will take much longer but will render the HD full of gobblygook if your willing to learn Linux.
I have found that that little dd command can be quite usefull as far as security as well as unerasing and cloning hard drives unlike windows where you have to have a full blown prog running a fat overbloated GUI.
This techniqe is not new by a far shot-it has been around before windows way back to the 70's and 80's and is still used today by forensics specialists that are fluent in Linux and Unix OS'S.
I suggest if you want/have the urge to learn the inner working of your hard drives take a peek into Linux or a self booting linux CD preferably Knoppix--for ease of use...it's what i usE.
PS you can surf odd that CD too without a HD even being present in the computer case..thats right an operating system that runs off a CD with no HD---right now im using a OS boot CD called Dam small linux 50 meg OS boots in about 30 seconds on a 52x drive full GUI---this is similar to No tracks..if you wish to save stuff you find on the web you will have to burn it live or use a zip drive or flash memory plugged into a usb port---read up on it,it's coolies.. take care peeps--just thought id give my 2 cents here stumbled on this website thought it was pretty cool....take care all. 8)

What are the requirements to use the Linux program you mention?
Well, I am more than willing to give it a shot.
Thank you for your tip and I will do some research on it.
Take care, my pal.

I wouldn't use that new-fangled Linux crap even if they paid me! No thanks, I will stick to good ol' DOS with DBAN running on it.

DD? You're so wrong...

Hi, I'm a Linux user myself and for 8 good years at least.

The way you suggested DD should be used is pretty bad, actually. Just one overwrite pass with zeros won't be safe against advanced recovering methods, and this assuming that the fact that DD doesn't bypass the OS and hardware caches when used like that won't affect your scenario.

ignorant

the person that said that it took off windows and he had to get a new computer is ignorant. Isnt it obvious thats what DBAN does??

...and the readon why your computer couldnt detect you hd is because DBAN deleted your partition. DBAN is good
