Eraser stuck - Please Help

Every time I attempt to execute an erase on unused disk space, it executes about 1/5th of the job and then stops moving from that point on. I left it for 12 hours and it had not budged even the slightest. I have closed the program, started over, run the program with administrative privileges etc. but it just won't work.

Is there a reason for this? Also, once I do finally get it to work, if I do 7 passes for example, will it be possible to recover those files even with a program like Recuva?
