Erasing encrypted files

i burn alot of encrypted files onto a CD for storage and security. with the files left on my HD, should i "erase" them while encrypted or should i decrypt them 1st and then "erase" them? does it make any difference either way?

it seems like i've heard, encrypting files also compress's them, and sometimes it's hard for Eraser-type programs to "erase" compressed files properly.
 
You definitely should not decrypt the files unless you deliberately want to have the plain text data on your hard drive. Just erase the encrypted files. It doesn't matter if the file is compressed either.
