Free or Direct Method to Import MBOX Files to Thunderbird

I am here to give a single solution to open Google Takeout MBOX data in Thunderbird. If you have a small amount of MBOX files then use this method.

  • Install Mozilla Thunderbird after downloading it.
Step 2: Install ImportExportTools NG Add-on
  • The ImportExportTools NG extension is required since Thunderbird does not support .mbox imports by default.
  • Launch Thunderbird.
  • In the upper-right corner, click the menu icon (☰).
  • Choose themes and add-ons.
  • Search for ImportExportTools NG in the bar.
  • After selecting Add to Thunderbird, select Install.
  • Restart Thunderbird.
Step 3: Create Local Folder
  • In Thunderbird, go to the left sidebar.
  • Right-click on Local Folders > Select New Folder.
  • Name the folder or click Create Folder.
Step 4: Import the .mbox File
  • Right-click on the new folder (or any existing folder under "Local Folders").
  • Select ImportExportTools NG > Import mbox file.
  • Choose "Import directly one or more mbox files" and click OK.
  • Browse to your .mbox file from Google Takeout and select it.
  • Click Open to start the import.
Step 5: View Imported Emails
  • Once imported, all your emails will appear in the selected folder inside Thunderbird.
Note:- This method can be lengthy and time-consuming. If you want to import 60 GB of Google Takeout data into Thunderbird then try the software solution.
