Installing Win7 (with format). Do I still need Eraser?

Thanks to everyone that worked on and developed the Eraser program. I recently started using it and have been loving it so far. MUCH thanks to the people that contribute to this forum also. Most all of my questions were answered just from reading here. Thanks!

My question:

I wanted to get rid of the clutter on my laptop so I just started over... Made a backup CD of the files I wanted to keep then did a fresh reinstall of Win7 and my software.

Did Windows actually format the drive before installing itself?

Is the free space on my drive full of old data still?

Am I correct in guessing that a format and new install of Win7 is not nearly as secure as actually running Eraser on the free space now?
