Indeed, you can open orphaned or inaccessible OST files in Thunderbird, although not straight away. Ultimately, Thunderbird does not support opening OST files, meaning you'll first have to convert the OST file into an Outlook-supporting format most likely EML. One reliable way to do this is with the TrustVare OST to EML Converter, which will preserve the folder structure, email formatting, metadata, attachments and header information, etc. Once you have converted your ost file to .eml, you can drag and drop it into Thunderbird or use add-ons to import the files directly.
