Massive error messages with Windows i

I am a long time user. Since buying a Windows 7 pc, i cannot run a good erase of unused disc space. I am using Eraser 6.1.0.1877. The error log is too big to upload, so I'll select pieces from each area. There are three types of errors. Can you help? What more info do you need? From the size of the error, I assume I have some W7 settings wrong.

Try a later build. I documented these problems for Joel several weeks ago. The underlying issue of the system files is unavoidable, and is very unlikely to created significant security issues for the average user, so Joel has downgraded these 'errors' to warnings, which is IMO very sensible. The other type of error ("Used by another process") was, I believe, some sort of bug, which seems to have been fixed. What has not yet been fixed is the tendency of Vista and Win 7 to give "out of disk space" errors before Eraser finishes the free space wipe (this is also a problem with Eraser 5 and these newer OSs). I hope they are addressing that in the new release due out ?soon.

Thanks, David. There are so many error messages that I'm having a difficult time finding out what, if anything, was erased. Is there a simple way to find this out? With Windows 7, there is no longer an ability to "watch" as particular files are erased.

In relation to unused disk space, the error messages basically tell you that cluster tip erasing didn't happen. For most people, IMO, this is unlikely to be a major issue, but if a program claims to do something, it ought to do it, so I'm glad the bug was (apparently) fixed.

The only way to check a free space wipe is (and always has been) to run a good recovery utility, such as Recuva, and see what it turns up. You will be surprised to find that it's quite a lot. But most of it is garbage, odd files of zero length an such like, including the detritus deliberately left behind by Eraser. What you need to look out for is things that you thought were gone forever and suddenly aren't. This can be down to the nature of the file system as much as to Eraser. For instance, defrag leaves copies of data behind when it moves files; you need to do a free space wipe to get rid of these.
