Unable to erase 0byte temp file...

New Member
When I try to delete some 0byte size files in a tmp directory I get a message, unable to locate file, yet the file is there.

Does anyone have any solutions on how to delete these files...

I have tried to delete them through the ms-dos prompt but since its only a virtual machine the delete command runs through but nothing actually gets deleted. It simply returns to the prompt and gives no error message.

I have also tried to delete the file by using the win2000 recovery console but whne I try to access the documents and settings folder is simply returns access denied even though I have logon as admin. Any help would be greatly appreciated as this has me tearing my hair out for 3 days now.

Or does anyone know of a way to get Win 2000 to boot into MS Dos....because there is no option in the boot options dialogue.

Cheers

Ps. Your doing a great job with this software and for giving it out free. Keep up the good work!!!

Secureoffice,
Are the files you are referring to empty files with either 1 or 2 digit numbers for names (ex. 18 or 6) or in a folder with a name like like HTE35UM4? On mine, the path is C:WindowsTemporary internet filesContent.IE5HTE35UM4* (windows 98). You did actually erase them. Internet explorer creates replacement files, which are presently empty. You can schedule the containing folder for regular erasing. You will see files there every time you use explorer, but they are new files.

No the files are residing in a directory in my documents....

I was originally copying some documents and when I was finished I erased the original folder. But now I have these files left over in a temporary directory....

They sit in a directory named....W100b.tmp and W8.tmp

The files are a group of files all with the names of the original files but with what seems to be empty. They are given as size : 0bytes and you cannot delete them. If you try and click on the property option it reads....the properties for this item are not available.

To me it seems as if there is nothing there but a filename....but I cant erase the damn thing.

The files may be empty but the filename is still there and they are confidential...hence my keeness to find a way to erase the filenames too.

Cheers

Ps. Renaming them does not work either....

Hi Trixy,

I have had files like this in win2k as well- not sure how to get rid
of them but since the original was erased Id feel confident there is
nothing recoverable left. Id wipe freespace and cluster tips as well
to be sure though :)

As for boot to DOS in win2k, I use win98 boot disks and a number of
custom floppy disk sets assembled over time. Biggest issue there is
if you have formatted your drives to NTFS, if so there are a number
of NTFS DOS drivers out there, some free/opensource ones too.

Another option may be to create and log in to a new admin account then
browse over to the my docs for the troublesome account and see if you
can erase them then...

HTH!!

Hey redleg,

Yeah, the drive is NTFS.

I just tried logging on as a different admin and attempted to delete them but the same thing happened again.

Do you know of a way to boot into dos for win2k using ntfs....if so Id appreciate a copy of your boot disks so that I could give it ago. I thought that the ntfs locks you out when you try to access the data independently.

I tried doing a search on the net on how to boot into dos on win2k but came up with nothing so Im not too hopeful.

Unfortunately the filenames themselves contain confidential details so I still have to try and remove them....

I feel your pain reference those files...

OTOH, NTFS is just a format, although it is tough(er) to get into than
most others. Now *if* you encrypted the files, which is a fairly
common practice in the My Documants folder *then* accessing them in DOS
may be a problem.

There are a few sites that have a variety of bootdisks available and
even better- if you have broadband connection is the newer rage with
the bootable CDs- which are mostly optimized linux distros and run
soley from the CDrom. as well there are free NTFS drivers available,
first that comes to mind is at Sysinternals, the have a free one that
should do as well. granted, a bootdisk/set comes in handier though :)

Since neither of us have our email addy available in profile and this
board doesnt appear to do IMs Ill have to seek out and post some
good ideas/links here. oh, do you use PGP? thats one way to find
me, redleg on the public keyservers, primary IDs are still valid...

Ill wait for your reply here before posting more.

WELL FOR F**K SAKES!!!

After spending the whole day researching and trawling the net...and I mean the whole day....its easter sunday and I blew the whole day cause microsoft cant write a bloody decent safe secure OS.

From looking at ntfs ports...that run under a dos boot disk...it turns out the only way u can get your hands ona copy is to dish up 400 bucks.

Then to microsoft.com...total joke to find anything there....to looking into posix commands and windows resource kits..

To "hackers broke into my machine and left loads of undeletable folders of warez and porn" and now I can delete them to finally finding a experts exchange or something and after clearing out all my folders above the tree and deleting higher and higer up into the tree and then mucking about with this command....they disappeared....

rmdir s "

This is a powerful command so beware.
It deletes down the folder tree structure all the way. So you "cd" in dos till you in a folder somewhere above tha bad folder and type that command.

Didnt seem to work first time but after mucking about a bit it did.

May the lord have mercy on my soul.

Thanks to all for their attempted help.

Im going to have some dinner now...cause its 9.30pm on easter sun night and I wasted the whole day on this s**t!!

there... free is better :)

and the "hackers" part, is that you or another bit of info you found to
help out?

if you have gotten rid of the folders/files finally, be sure and erase
free space and tips! if you still want to talk bootdisks/CDs send me a
note.

yup my email is valid...but I got it ok in the end.

The hackers part was some posting on annoyance.org I found....

Couldnot find a free driver that would read/write NTFS.
Apparently its Microsoft secret so nobody knows!!

Anyway, there you go!!
