What exactly happens after using "Erase unused disk space"

I am curious. My gb was looded. I went from 200 to 12- gb of storage. What will happen once it is filled and done erasing? Please answer fast I need to know before i end up ruining my hard drive completely.

All the temp files created will get deleted and your disk space should return to normal.
