What is the best way to erase everything?

with Eraser: As far as the settings i should use, the method, and so forth. I am really tempted to use DBAN, but i'm afraid. haha

And what does erasing free space do? Is every deleted file considered free space? Does that mean that Eraser will wipe "deleted" files?
