wiping unused disk space from DOS

Hi,
I am trying to use eraser from DOS to wipe my unused space on drive C. I have been following the examples in the help file, but it is not working. I keep getting the list of options etc displayed when I enter the command. Please could anyone tell me exactly what I need to type at the DOS prompt (I wish to use Gutmann method). (I have already successfully erased the swap file from the DOS command).

What exactly did you type then? And was this after you shut down Windows and booted to DOS, or did you type it to a DOS prompt while Windows was still running?
