Any Speed ups for XP (Safe Mode <Failures >Time)

Im running XP Pro with 256MB RAM no Page File.
Win98 on C:
XP on E:
Data on D:
Question: Any Speed ups for XP.
e.g. I found Safe Mode lowers Lock Failures but increases time.

Wipe Freespace "E" 1 pass.
Failures Erased C.tips time
Safe 346 4824 72116 2484
Normal 2296 4821 68713 1857

Question: Ive just Gutmanned the free space, would it be good practice to DriveImage "E" (XP NTFS) then Gutmann the files on "E" (to wipe the underlying data) and finally restore the "E" image back on top.

Thanks for previous response(s) :)

Im guessing that Windows does not enable DMA on your hard drive when started on Safe Mode, that would explain why overwriting takes more time. Also, when fewer system components are loaded, the fewer locked files there are.

Personally, I wouldnt bother. But if you are that concerned about your privacy, it would probably be easier to use encryption in the first place.
