what happen to my hard drive boot sector info?

If your BIOS can see the drive, then use DBAN to completely erase the drive. Then it should be recognized by Windows installer. I doubt that you need to flash anything.

    Hi im new here

Yes, *anything* that was previously deleted will be overwritten during a free-space wipe. You can choose to overwrite 1 time or multiple times.

    Can I use DBAN?

    It really isn't that weird. Marketing departments advertise drives as a certain size even when the real size is smaller. For example, 1,024 Bytes = 1 Kilobyte (KB) 1,024 Kilobytes = 1 Megabyte (MB) (1,024 * 1,024 = 1,048,576 bytes) 1,024 Megabytes = 1 Gigabyte (GB) (1,024 * 1,024 * 1,024...

what happen to my hard drive boot sector info?

Since you have no partition on the drive, the installer for Windows 2000 will ask if you want to create a partition. It defaults to the whole drive, but you can specify what size you want. Then format the partition (probably with NTFS).

    Hi im new here

Open Windows Explorer (or My Computer) so it shows the various drives you have. Right-click on the drive you want. Choose Erase unused space. This overwrites the areas that are not occupied by current files, so anything that was deleted previously will be overwritten.

    Best Erase Method

You won't get a necessarily straight answer. There are many claims one way and the other. In my experience, even one pass makes recovery impossible. I've used a variety of forensic tools to try to recover erased data and was unable to. I typically use 3 passes and then erase unused space. If a...

    How secure?

Ok, I did. I am using a Windows XP system. I put a 2KB JPG file into a folder and deleted it normally. I ran Recover4all and it found it and recovered it (though the recovered file was corrupt). I placed another 2KB JPG file with a different name into the folder and ran Eraser on it using the...

In Roxio 7, click File, Burn from Disk Image File. I imagine that Roxio 5 is similar.

    A quick question

3 rounds is more than enough. I don't know of anyone that can retrieve real data after even 1 pass. I have heard people expound theory after theory, but no actual results. The stuff about magnetic microscopy is for the most secretive federal spooks and even then I doubt they could come up with much.

    Can I use DBAN?

Don't burn an .iso as a data disk. An .iso is an image and needs to be burned as an image. Using Nero, click file, burn image, and select the .iso

    history,cookies , cache

All the ones listed in the thread mentioned above...please take time to actually read it so you understand what you are doing. There are folders that you want to schedule that contain a variety of randomly named files, and 2 specific files. C:\Documents and Settings\User\Application...

    Problem nuking just a partition?

Did you really press F10, or was it F12?

    How secure?

I don't know of anyone able to retrieve information that has been erased even 1 time. Usually Eraser writes over information 3-7 times. Most law enforcement cannot afford the technology or personnel to try to look at magnetic traces, and even if they did, it would be in extreme cases like...

Accidently started erasing the wrong drive

For the data recovery part, you could try putting the drives into another system as data drives and run a Windows based file recovery program. I often use a Knoppix CD to boot up the system and use "dd" and "nc" (netcat) to detect and transfer files that were deleted onto another system and...

Bug in Eraser 5.7 still not fixed.

I use a fully patched and updated Win 2000 PC, and Eraser works fine as do the file menus.

    Hard Drive Wipe

Once the drive is nuked, install Windows and any service packs, install antivirus, connect to Windows update and get any updates from there. You probably won't need any special drivers, unless you have equipment that isn't recognized by XP.

Erase "Recent" folder at boot creates problem savi

I added the files in "Recent" folder to the scheduler to erase at each boot, but then encountered a strange problem. Once the system came up I could not save any files through "file save" or "Save As". The dialog box would either just disappear or (using save as) would give error about not being...

Problem with memory after running DBAN

After you ran DBAN, what steps did you take to partition and format the hard drive? I haven't installed ME for a long time, so I don't remember if it give you those options during install. You might run FDISK from a floppy and do delete and recreate the partition that way. Then format with...

    Dumb Question From A Newbie

Yes, the 35 pass method will take lots longer than the DOD method of 7 passes or the single pass method. My times were based on the single pass method, which I should have mentioned. Yes, the unused space erase should not affect any non-erased files. The only run all command I've seen is...
