Time to erase free disc space

I have C: Drive of 70.7GB, usually with about 61GB of free space, as I don't store much on the computer. Running a 1 pass pseudorandom (PNRG) wipe on free space takes about 30 mins for the cluster tips (ie to wipe the cluster tips of about 9.5 to 10GB of files) and 1 hour or so for the free...

Master File Table Records on free space erase

I've answered your other query in your other thread re: running times for a free space wipe.

Master File Table Records on free space erase

have a look at the reply I've given in that thread. it's (I suspect) a Windows problem that simply requires the user to reboot Windows after running Eraser. The problem certainly sounds identical.

Eraser may have messed up a dll.

have a look at this thread from a few months ago: http://www.snugserver.com/phpbb2/viewtopic.php?t=1669 There is a link to previous posts about this problem, going back a few years. is this a similar problem? A reboot after running eraser solves this problem.

Master File Table Records on free space erase

it's perfectly safe. This is from the Eraser Help File: (after explaining about the Free Space Wipe) If you are running Windows NT or 2000 and the file system on the drive is NTFS, Eraser will next overwrite the free space on the Master File Table (MFT). The reason why this is done is that on...

    DBAN Problems

Sadly, the developer of DBAN abandoned this forum several months ago (he last posted here back in February) and no longer replies to any queries posted here (see my thread from July 26 about this). The support forum for DBAN now appears to be...

Sensitive Data Deletion - A couple of queries

I'd advise caution here as if there is a recovery partition then wiping the hard drive will wipe that too, leaving the user with a hard drive with literally nothing on it - not only no operating system but also no Recovery partition to reset the computer back to the factory image. Most...

    DBAN Forum Support information

From now on, if you have a question relating to DBAN, it would appear to be better to direct the support questions to http://sourceforge.net/forum/forum.php?forum_id=208932 Since April, this forum has been dead for support - it would have been nice of the admin to have told us. I suppose...

    DBAN v1.0.7 / DBAN Beta 2007042900

It would appear that DBAN have ceased answering any queries at this forum and the product has its own forum elsewhere - no wonder no-one gets an answer here. The new forum is at http://sourceforge.net/forum/forum.php?forum_id=208932

Eraser loses against TuneUp Utilities 2007: Why?

well, that's true but the computer would need sufficient RAM to be stable.

    DBAN v1.0.7 / DBAN Beta 2007042900

I wonder if anyone / admin can clear up a little bit of confusion here. When I use DBAN 1.0.7, in the Disks and Partitions screen I can see the following: (IDE 0,0,0,-,-) (Hard Drive info) (IDE 0,0,0-,1) Partition (IDE 0,0,0,-,2) Partition To wipe the entire disk I just choose the...

Eraser loses against TuneUp Utilities 2007: Why?

The paging file can be deleted at computer close down - it is a registry setting, but that setting can be controlled via Eraser. The swap file itself can't be deleted by Eraser simply because it is a Windows file that is locked, and therefore can't be touched. BCWipe allows the user to wipe...

Eraser loses against TuneUp Utilities 2007: Why?

I'd forgotten about TuneUp Utilities - I downloaded a trial version about 2 years ago and it's since long been removed from my computer following a clean WXP reinstall - it's a great program. The free trial version is fully functional too, for 30 days. Recuva is the quickest file recovery...

Eraser loses against TuneUp Utilities 2007: Why?

I'm not sure what has gone wrong, but I downloaded the trial version of Tune Up and then did a freespace wipe with Eraser - it found nothing (except 0 byte files, which I expected). I also ran 3 other undelete programs: Recuva, Restoration and Recover4All and each produced the same result - no...

    What exactly does erazer do?

Yes, that's what it does! I suggest you read the Help files on the program itself before using it - the files give a clear explanation of what eraser does.

    Eraser Failure.

ah, good to hear! Like I said, it must be one of those random things that happens to computers, a program goes astray and a reinstallation often works!

    Eraser Failure.

Alos, if that SpywareStopper program is still in your startup folder and you have it unchecked, check it again, restart your computer and see if these files reappear. If so you may need to reinstall SpywareStopper.

    Eraser Failure.

I must admit, i haven't got a clue! Perhaps it's just one of those things that computers do from time to time to baffle us? By the way, the 35 pass erase wouldn't really make any difference in that if 1 pass wouldn't get rid of it, the other 34 would make no difference. If eraser is going to...
