Erasing free space on your disc question?

Yes. Eraser works by creating temporary files to overwrite any data on the free space and and the end of this process the temporary files are deleted, thus recovering the space. During the process of wiping free space, the available free space will reduce until it is all over written with...

    Eraser Failure.

I was going to suggest running an antispyware / antivirus etc check but after doing a quick google on the icon names to see where they might be from I found a post similar to yours on an AOL message board and (if it was yourself) you said you did a thorough anti-malware check. If so, then you've...

    Font corruption?

I've just done a quick search and found the thread... I've definitely got a better memory than I thought - the thread is from August 2005, a month before I registered! http://bbs.heidi.ie/viewtopic.php?t=136 ... edec17c4a5 and here's the first thread about this problem, back to 2003...

    Font corruption?

I remember someone posting something similar to this in the early days of me visiting this board, and before I registered. That would probably be about late 2004 to mid-2005. The advice for fixing the font problem was by rebooting after running a free space wipe in eraser (5.7), as irongeek has...

    NOT "Secure Data Removal"

I just tried the same as yourself - and the files had been removed and weren't recoverable. Are you sure you had the search only for deleted files and not all files? I can only see 0 byte files for eraser, there's no files with any data in them. I used the same search as you, the raw data...

Does additional RAM make DBAN run any faster?

thanks sir fer, I had a feeling it may make no difference. I'm doing the wipe and reinstall next weekend, so I'll find out for myself whether this is the case for my computer!

wipe all of the hard drive

the program you need is DBAN, which is bundled with Eraser but the version bundled with 5.7 is now a much older version. DBAN is available to download as a standalone program and can be copied to either floppy disk or burned to a CD (which is how I have used it). See...

    Question re: Protected Files :)

I have about 2,500 that show up as protected and where the cluster tip (or slack space as it is also known) can't be erased. These are the files that Windows will not let eraser (or anything else) touch, they are system protected files, usually locked in memory. In fact these are the files...

No answers to users questions and problems

I don't know if you saw my answer in your original thread http://www.snugserver.com/phpbb2/viewto ... highlight= The choice to erase the RB is there whether the bin is full or empty (eraser 5.7)

Does additional RAM make DBAN run any faster?

I have recently upgraded the RAM in my computer, tripling the amount of RAM I previously had. I'm going to do a disk wipe and fresh reinstall of Windows in the next month or so and was wondering whether additional RAM would make DBAN run any faster? Or is that more down to the type of...

Recycle Bin is Empty, context menu has Erase Recycle Bin

I (still) use Eraser 5.7. I too get the option to Erase Recycle Bin (in the right click context menu) when it is empty, then upon clicking that option I too get the dialog box "Recycle Bin is empty". It's always been like that, I've never really thought of it as being a problem.

    "File Locked Error"

I've had this problem happen before, not very often, but it has happened. All I can think is that some process is still locking the file though I don't know why. Usually waiting a few seconds and retrying cures the problem, the other method being (as you said) to delete to the recycle bin and...

    Windows swap file

choosing that option definitely does make a registry change (in one of the registry strings the entry value changes from 0 to 1), and it is the Windows system itself rather than Eraser that wipes the pagefile. However, I don't know if it wipes multiple swap files.

Eraser unable to delete files like cookies.txt

CCleaner works by marking the files for deletion, as far as I am aware. I don't think the program literally deletes them there and then. The next time you restart the computer those files are deleted (but not securely wiped) and a new file is created.

not compat with CHKDSK on NTFS

I use both CCleaner and Eraser and have no problem - try my suggestion and see what happens.

not compat with CHKDSK on NTFS

why not remove all the programs, run chkdsk, then add the programs one by one running chkdsk after each add? It may be time consuming but you'll find out which (if any) program is causing the problem.

when i run eraser 5.7 will it erase my operating system?

No. It will only delete anything in free space and cluster tips of files and any files that you choose to delete manually (either by using the ON Demand feature of Eraser or by right clicking on the name of the file you wish to delete and choosing Eraser from the context menu). DBAN is the...

    Partition Question

I've just double checked what shows when I start DBAN and in fact my computer shows 3 different entries, the hard drive and two partitions, like this: (IDE 0,0,0,-,-) WDC X (X = serial number or manufacturers number of hard drive, manufactured by Western Digital) (IDE 0,0,0,-,1) Partition...
