Can people tell you used Eraser

if you do a free space wipe then eraser works by creating thousands of small files as it overwrites the free space. These files will have a creation date, as well as all being 0kb in size once the eraser program has run. If you are deleting files by using the context menu then there will...

Used DBAN and now I get no post screen!

Re: Update I was just about to suggest this! My motherboard has jumpers that can be used to reset the CMOS, removing the battery has the same effect. I had to do this last year when curiosity got the better of me and I turned off the shared graphics in the BIOS to see what would happen - the...

    MFT Questions

is there any beneficial reason to defrag and use NTREGOPT as often as once a day? I usually do both about once a fortnight, though I rarely save anything to my computer and mainly use it for the internet and usenet. I run an "on demand" Eraser wipe (eg Firefox cache) about once every 2 days...

Erasing data on a hard drive with bad sectors

I'm sure you will get an error report. Eraser may still run OK and perform a disk wipe, but you may get an error at the end along the lines of "completed with errors", something like that. You may as well try doing it, I can't see that you've got anything to lose as it will either work, or...

    Powercut during HD erasing

I'm no expert, but I'd say it has been securely wiped. If you wish, do another wipe using PRNG (one pass) with verification, it will take about 2 hours at the most. 35 passes is really overkill anyway, I think the Gutmann method applied to older disks, modern disks don't need such...

    Its not working

By the way, don't run the nuke disk - you won't have an operating system left! It wipes everything on the hard drive, not just free space...

    Its not working

it depends on what you mean by some files failed. Were you doing a cluster tips wipe in addition to a free space wipe? The default option is to do this. If so, then you should have got a report showing that perhaps a few thousand files couldn't be wiped. If so, this is normal. It was trying to...

Do computers store any information outside the hard drive?

there are people who believe that RAM is never totally wiped, but I've never had such sensitive data that I had to worry about what may be kept there. I always think that if you wipe a hard drive with DBAN the computer should be as clean as is possible. Some people may wish to have a better...

Do computers store any information outside the hard drive?

if you're disposing of a hard drive you might want to consider running DBAN first, to wipe everything that is on the hard drive - not only the operating system but any other, more personal, files that may be there. Someone could pick up the hard drive if you just throw it away, and it could...

    noob question

My understanding is that those files are Eraser files, and not just empty shells of old files. I thought that as part of the freespace wipe, Eraser creates thousands of small, temporary files, which are then deleted - what you see are the zero KB files left behind by Eraser. This is from the...

    noob question

or perhaps the System Restore feature has been turned off? On an 80GB hard drive the default option is for System Recovery to take up a maximum of about 8GB of space. If this switches off, that's potentially a lot of extra space freed up.

Fear re: warning NOT to erase Unused Disk Space w/Eraser.

Re: Thanks! yup, version 5.82 is sound, it works a treat - the problems the earlier versions of 5.8 had has been sorted and now it works fine. There's no need for anyone to worry if they have the latest build (v5.82).

A question (that's probably been answered 100 times)

it does, yeah. It overwrites any files in freespace. It doesn't delete the freespace itself - that would be impossible! But what is left after a freespace wipe is unrecoverable, as secure you can get, unless you use DBAN.

Problems running some programs after using v5.82

after further investigation... there is a file which is being created in the Temp folder that v5.7 cannot delete, therefore it is preventing the Temp folder itself from being deleted. With v5.82 I haven't had this problem once, and each time the Temp folder has been deleted. The file is 0kb...

Problems running some programs after using v5.82

I have replicated the error and located the problem - and it is mine not eraser. Or at least eraser is behaving slightly differently in how it wipes one specific folder - the Temp folder For 3 years I have had eraser set to delete a number of files and folders, some of which it can't really...

Problems running some programs after using v5.82

yeah, I do the same. Close all programs and non-essential processes. It makes the freespace wipe better (esp. for wiping cluster tips). I then always reboot the computer immediately after a freespace wipe.

Problems running some programs after using v5.82

Thanks for your reply I'll reinstall v5.82 later on and replicate the problem, but for the meantime by "on-demand" I mean where you just delete specific files and folders, not freespace. I have eraser configured to delete such things as firefox cache, firefox cookies, temp files, Office...

Problems running some programs after using v5.82

I've uninstalled 5.82 and reinstalled 5.7 and the problem has vanished - both programs are now running perfectly fine after running the On-Demand feature of eraser. Could it be something unique to my computer? MS Money is the 2004 edition, but McAfee Security Centre is the latest edition...

Problems running some programs after using v5.82

after using the On Demand feature in Eraser I am encountering some strange problems with some programs on my computer. The only 2 programs I have attempted to try to run / view after doing a wipe are MS Money and the McAfee Security Center Personal Firewall part which shows a summary of inbound...

    Erasing the XP Swap File

this is in the Eraser help files: Windows NT and 2000 Windows NT (and 2000) has a security feature that will overwrite the paging file at shutdown. The overwriting is done by the operating system after all applications are closed so most data will be overwritten. There are small areas...
