Wiped File Names Still Visible - Is This Right?

I think my original post may have caused some confusion - I was referring to two seperate processes: 1. wiping the computer and internet files and tracks via Privacy Guard 2. wiping free space by using "Erase Deleted Data" When I did a free space wipe with East-Tec I used the "Erase...

Wiped File Names Still Visible - Is This Right?

I downloaded the evaluation version of East-Tec Eraser and found it to be disappointing. I ran Privacy Guard and all the deleted files were easily found in free space (CCleaner doesn't appear to securely delete files either, but that is free and just as complete for what it "deletes" eg temp...

Wiping files too large for Recycle Bin

actually I find Restoration to be inconsistent - either that or I'm not using it correctly - but this time a restore to a floppy disk finds the 2 files I just restored still there in free space. I've never really been able to use this program with 100% success - sometimes a search will show X...

Wiping files too large for Recycle Bin

I've just restored a JPG file using Restoration - it does appear to actually restore the file rather than merely copying the deleted file. I deleted a JPG file from within "My Pictures" on my computer (using right click - Shift + Delete), ran Restoration, highlighted the file and then clicked...

Wiping files too large for Recycle Bin

Does restoration actaully restore the deleted file though. As far as I can see it copies the deleted file while leaving the original still "deleted" in free space.

    Has DBAN destroyed my harddrive?

DBAN wipes everything - the best way to look at it is that after a wipe you have a totally unformatted hard drive. A clean disk, if you like (although one with bad sectors in your case!). After running DBAN on an entire disk, any tables of bad sectors, or anything else for that matter, are wiped.

jUST DOWNLOADED ERASER SETUP TO MY DESKTOP

the download is a compressed (zipped) folder - you need to extract the files in order to get at and run the actual Eraser program. Click on the EraserSetUp Application icon - it should then show a dialog box with the option to extract all the files. Once done you can then run the actual setup...

Can't delete bootex.log file in Free Space

I realise that this probably isn't anything to actually do with the Eraser program, but I was wondering if anyone has had this problem (if it is a problem) and has a solution. The bootex.log file is created (at the volume root) when a chkdsk is run. The file logs the outcome and the...

Simple guide to deleting internet content with Eraser!!

FYI = For Your Information the temp files folder has at its heart an index.dat file, as does temp internet files and history. When it is empty it shows as being either 16kb or 32kb in size - the size of the empty index.dat file. As data is saved to these files so they grow. When they are...

Permanent Deletion to Protect Client Records

if it isn't after all that it never will be... I'd say that was much more than what is needed to completely wipe the drive and make the data almost certainly unrecoverable. When you say 25 passes with PRNG do you mean 25 rounds of one pass or did you run the PRNG program 25 seperate times...

    New User - best wipe

I did an 8 round PRNG wipe which was both relatively quick and seemed to be of a sufficient level of certainty that what was there before won't be anymore! I suppose fewer rounds would probably still have been sufficient but that seemed to be the midway point between what some posters here...

    Erasing Unused Disk space

This is correct! When using this program Eraser will only wipe those parts of the disk which are marked by Windows as free (ie for rewriting over). All files and folders will be left untouched. I've been using the program for a couple of years now and have had no problem. The only thing...

    Doe Eraser Erase Locked Files?

no, if a file is locked, it is locked by Windows at startup (I'm not sure what you mean by it is locked by explorer.exe). Most locked files are locked for a good reason, so you need to be careful about deleting it. You could try running Eraser at startup, using the Scheduler and see if Eraser...

Can I download to new computer and copy program to old one?

If you mean the Eraser program, then yes. Copy either the original Eraser57SetUp compressed (zip) folder or the extracted Eraser57Setup folder to your old computer then run the EraserSetUp Application file. The program will then install as normal.

some questions about DBAN before I use it

some questions about DBAN before I use it

Sorry to bother you again dajhorn, can I just check something else before I do sell my computer. After running the DBAN program is it necessary to save the log file? After the message appeared to save the log file, I inserted a blank floppy and kept pressing ENTER (or something similar) and...

some questions about DBAN before I use it

Thanks for the reply! Everything went smoothly. The DBAN program is excellent and easy to use (I wasn't 100% certain which was the best wipe option to use so I chose the PRNG option and did 8 rounds, which took about 4.5 hours. For future reference, which is the best option / amount of rounds...

some questions about DBAN before I use it

Hi I've been reading through the threads here about using DBAn and then reinstalling the OS afterwards but just to check that I have got everything correct can I just run through what I think may happen and check if it is what will happen! 1. Create NukeBoot disk 2. restart computer - at...
