    Questions

DBan wipes the entire contents of your hard drive leaving it completely empty. Eraser wipes the free space and does not destroy any files on your hard drive.

    Eraser with encrypted volumes

. There is no need to have the TrueCrypt volume mounted while wiping free space on C:. In fact, it would probably be better to unmount it first.

    Eraser with encrypted volumes

The contents of your TrueCrypt volume are to be treated the same as if it were on a normal FAT/NTFS partition, in that you can recover data from it when mounted. The volume when unmounted will just look like random data and data is secure (assuming a strong passphrase). The answer depends on...

2 questions: 1 about the paging file, 1 about index.dat

I covered this here. If you still have problems let me know. I never disabled the pagefile in win98. I believe the reason though for disabling it was that the pagefile can grow and shrink when could result in certain data (outside of the pagefile) being missed during a free space wipe. What...

    'Buy Eraser' - O RLY?

http://www.heidi.ie/node/20 It would be nice if it was made a little clearer that this is a donation and not a requirement to buy eraser. I'm sure it will catch some people out.

    Cannot successfully download Eraser

The latest being 5.86a or 5.87beta1? Perhaps try downloading one of the older versions 5.7 for example and see if that works any better. I'm sure Joel will be around at some stage and be able to shed some light onto your issue.

Recovery of Data After Secure Erase

To finish off, I'd be pretty confident that your use of FDE (or containers) along with secure erasing is good enough to prevent all casual attacks and at least slow down any determined (read Govt) attacks (assuming your keys are strong).

Recovery of Data After Secure Erase

It's unfortunately an area where getting hard and fast data proves quite difficult. The time and resources to do the testing are very high so it keeps most hobbyists out of the running and those that can probably don't want others knowing. The last worth while research I remember reading was...

Vista IE files and recycle bin

I'm not a Vista user but you can find out where the cache is stored is by opening IE and doing to Tools \ Internet Options \ Temporary internet files \ settings. If you do a search of your computer for the words 'cookies' and 'history' you should find the other two. I'm not sure this is...

Recovery of Data After Secure Erase

It's interesting on where he was going but there are a few issues. The paper was written in 2006 and mention the Gutmann method as well as quoting Gutmann from his paper (written in 1996) saying "it is effectively impossible to sanitize storage locations by simple overwriting them....". What...

Recovery of Data After Secure Erase

Good lord, for such a short clip they sure did manage to pack a lot of FUD in. One think, if I understood correctly, was that Stephen 'Cut the sides don't touch the back' Bright never actually referred to secure file erasing until the very end, he does mention over writing but I don't think...

Free Space Gone - Tried FAQ Suggestions

If the external drive is fat32 formatted* there is a 4Gb file size limit. Have you been able to copy large files like this before? * likely unless you formatted it after purchase as all ext drives ship as fat32.

Eraser v5.86 silent (unattended) installation and uninstall

Is there any way to specify a default .ers file to use when installing like this? Would be very handy in a corporate environment (or any where you have to do a large number of installs) to be able to ensure all compters get set up with the same base scheduled tasks.

Recovery of Data After Secure Erase

If it is mounted it can be accessed. You also have to assume that the crypto will never be computationally cracked, which will more than likely happen, could be tomorrow, could be next year, could be in 100's of years time. Key files can be beaten out of you ;) (yes I am aware of plausible...

Recovery of Data After Secure Erase

I've yet to see a verified case in many years. That's not to say it can't be done but no one is openly admitting it. Not really, encryption always has the potential to be cracked, so you should always treat it as such and securely delete files and securely wipe free space. Also once the...

missing digital signature for 32-bit eraser 5.86a?

Not overly although judging by the fact that Joel* only started supplying hashes after people requesting them it isn't/wasn't high on his list of priorities to provide a way to ensure we are getting what we expect. Legacy, the web site as you'll notice if you browse around it is very much out...

Please help - my son has been arrested.

By slim I mean a low / small chance. With out having access to your( sons) computer to investigate it is hard to say but I would hazard a guess that if you(r son) used ccleaner with default settings and the images were not moved any where else then a free space wipe using eraser will prevent...

missing digital signature for 32-bit eraser 5.86a?

Nope you are not being dumb, unfortunately the website is out of date and full of inaccuracies, pgp signing is not used. Hashes are the closest thing you will get and even then they were only introduced in 5.87-beta1. Overwriter did post hashes for 5.86a but I believe they are based on what he...
