Yes, eraser will perform the same on an external hard drive as it would on an internal one.
You will be able to wipe free space or files in Windows no need for DOS. Regarding the "windows memory" files, assuming you have one set up on the external hard drive you will need to wipe it in DOS...

Giving 5.83 a go as I wanted to make use of the different wipe pattern schedules I've discovered that any tasks entered into the scheduled list will not run.
Doing a manual run, wipes the files listed for deletion.
I believe this option turns on a feature in Windows via the registry that clears the Pagefile.sys. As such Windows should know to clear any and all Pagefile.sys on the system.
If you are formatting the drive, I would not worry about defraging the drive at all. The reason for erasing free space and then defraging is that if you defrag first you risk moving files around the drive and as a result leave file remnants that eraser can not reach.

It only caused a problem when erasing free space. using this option to Erase files is safe.
If you look at the erasing options on 5.82 you will see it is present under the Files tab but not the Unused disk space

You need to supply exact error messages. "rough" details which are just two file paths are of little use.
What version of eraser are you using, what are you doing when you get the message, what version of Windows (incl patch level).
Not entirely clear about what your saying your problem is, but would I be correct in saying that after wiping free space some of the files (that should not have been touched) on your hard drive have become corrupted?

ADS will be erased when wiping a file, however if you wish to get rid of restore points, I think the only way to do it is to turn the option off, reboot and then wipe free disk space.
5.83 is supposed to have better wildcard support, although I have yet to get it to work, ymmv

edit -> preference -> erasing -> unused disk space
add "new" pattern. Give is a name, eg "zero" click add and it will automatically add a zero pattern. then save it. Once saved. Highlight "zero" on the unused disk space to select this...
