cd rom version wont burn to cd

I have downloaded the iso file from internet. Then burned it to my cd, but the burn only copied the iso file to the cd instead of opening it and burning all of the application files to the cd. What am I doing wrong, this process shouldnt take so long? Please help

ISO files are CD images (like a snapshot of an entire CD), which means you can't burn it to CD as a file and have it work. In your software that you use to make CDs, there is probably a way to burn ISO files. It may reference burning a CD image.

For example, in Nero brand software I would select Recorder, Burn Image, then point it to the ISO file. It then takes the ISO and maps it out on the CD.
 
disk image software

anyone know of any disk image software available for free? My software is the basic version and wont do disk imaging
