Erase unused space

Hi, i'm new here. I don't speak english very well, sorry, but I hope you can solve my doubt :)

I ran ''Erase unused space'' on C:
Everything was fine, until I wanted to open my browser and wasn't open. Suddenly all desktop icons disappeared. I panicked and cancel the task (I thought it was removing EVERYTHING from the hard disk). So when I stopped the task, all dekstop icons appears again.

Is this normal? I mean, when the program are executing, should I leave the PC alone?

Are you 100% sure you did a freespace erase? Also make sure you have a backup before doing any large scale erasure
